Description in 1996, Dream Factory created a game that many diehard enthusiasts of the 2D/3D fighting crowd considered to be one of the coolest franchises to hit the gaming scene.

Its strongest selling point was having characters designed by Akira Toriyama of Dragon Ball fame. The game itself runs at smooth 60fps due to its lack of textured polygons and reduced details which give the game a peculiar look. This was Squaresoft's first incursion into the fighting game genre, although an adventure-like quest mode is part of the game. Packaged with both the American and Japanese version of the game was a sampler disc featuring a pre-release demo of Final Fantasy VII, including video previews of Final Fantasy Tactics, Bushido Blade, and SaGa Frontier. It is believed that some people only purchased Tobal No. 1 in order to acquire the demo of Final Fantasy VII.

(Heh, I was one of those people that got Tobal No. 1 just for FFVII and much to my surprise, ended up becoming a genuine Tobal fan)...

The game became such a big hit that it sparked the release of Tobal 2, which at that time, influenced me to mod my PlayStation just so I could play it. I'm still heated that a PS2 equivalent never saw the light of day. I really miss this game and I'm sure those of you who were fans do too.
Production Date: Sometime in 1997

Nice piece; I wish Tobal would get a current-gen remake, or even an HD release.

Tobal 2 in my opinion is still the hands down greatest fighter of all time! As I am sure you know, even before DOA every single 3D fighter since has copied from it ranging from the 360 range of motion to the reversible grapple system. Truley a crime it did not make it to the states to be truely appreciated. I am honored that someone else knows and appreciates the true King of Fighters.
Great work!

No problem, I know how much children can occupy your time. I have one of my own. Don't let her run you around too much.
