Love the symbolism and as well as the lighting. I also like how you put your own style into Kaworu. Beautiful job.

All it is is practice! 8D Also tutorials and observation... A lot of my shading techniques come from just watching how light reflects off objects and trying to replicate the effect QuQ;; sometimes I just fool around and try and replicate certain styles of colouring... it's good practice and you can learn a lot!
But thank you!

Bah you're welcome and I do that a lot, I just get made to feel guilty by various tumblr artists for using it because for some reason there are some jerks out there that think certain tools shouldn't be used, it's like, sorry my clouds need to be dodged. There's a sun behind them, if you look at clouds in RL they have that dodge look to 'em ya know? I'm ranting now.

LMAO ah well whatever gets you the results that you want...
well, imo, the only problem I would have with the dodge tool is that I find it hard to control? Also if you need to make changes, it'll be difficult to edit later |Dc;;; so my solution would just be to make a throw a layer over top and change the layer properties to like, colour dodge and change the lighting that way... because it would be easier to make adjustments if I needed to...
BUT THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT! I wouldn't tell anyone how to colour, everyone finds their own ways to do things, it's silly to pick on others for something like that? 8|;; lmao tumblr /shakes head

Haha tumblr is hilarious I think. I actually am lazy and challenge myself by using the least amount of layers possible. I do mess with the layer filters from time to time, but I never get the right atmosphere with them. One day I'll get it. Might have to fix the opacity on it or something.
Don't ya feel so educated talking all this photoshop talk? Haha

OH MAN BUT LAYER FILTERS ARE THE BEST *A* cries I love using them to help give the image depth, like if you put them in between layers and sorta 'highlight' objects, it adds a sort of 'separation' between objects/subjects/foreground/mid-ground/background and helps images not look as clustered...? And lighting... ahhh you can control the lighting so well for really dynamic effects.
Like, this is this image without any of the layers with filters on it to give the image depth/atmosphere .
But most importantly, I love them because it just gives me a lot of control... I find you can spend more time getting dramatic colours/effects right than just throwing one of these pups on top. I also I have a tendency to go back and make small edits when I notice something could be improved upon (since I'd like to make prints and sell my art one day?) and it makes editing so much easier. I feel more lazy doing it this way |Dc;; since it's so easy to use and in the end it saves me any hassle later. IT GIVES ME PEACE OF MIND OTL
I actually use less than half as many layers as I used to... back in the day a lot of my art consisted of about 100-200 layers. This whole image is only about 46 layers, at least half of them being layer filters or just layers for the tree leaves LOL. Most of the colouring/shading/etc. itself is on a single layer per element/colour... I've experimented with my process to optimize my art and give me the most control with the least amount of effort. I'm a lazy person too but putting that little work in here and there just helps in the end and makes the entire process like 1000x less frustrating and 9001x more enjoyable.
But do experiment! I would recommend playing around with them *A* I would consider they are incredibly valuable tool and great asset for any artist.

That's something I drew, I used one layer effect, no wait, two, one was to make the mountains more misty and it's just lowered opacity really, the other was maybe an overlay, or soft light, might be linear dodge, can't remember, but the point is, the only thing I spent a lot of time on drawing were the fog clouds lifting off the mountains.
The mountains I just used a brush I made based on a photo I had taken of where I lived, all the mountains are just different tree lines really, the idea was the atmosphere. I want to create backgrounds quickly but beautifully. If I have to spend my entire day on one crappy background I'm going to go insane haha. I get layer filters. I use them I do, but I also don't see why you can use dodge. I mean, I love adding an effect with dodge, or using burn to do something. They have some filter effects as well. I don't shade or highlight with them, but I do get a shiny effect from them once in a blue moon.
