Description Well, as promised, here it is at last: my latest animation I have slaved over for the past two months.

I wanted to make an animation that captures the essence of a children picture's book in it's design and story but make it come alive in the animated form. And think this worked out pretty well given the time and possibility. With the aid of my English co-worker Michelle Radford who did the voices and fellow student Alexander Reumers who does Design of the Media who composed quite a suiting musical score for it on very short notice.
It became more alive with their help than I ever could possible achieve on my own. I just wrote the story (with some grammatical help from my friends) hand painted all the characters and backgrounds which I then assembled first in Photoshop and then staged in After Effects, animated the action, worked out a montage and lip-synced the whole damn bloody 3 minutes of it.

It's just a crappisch mpeg, but that's the best I can do. If you want to see it in it's full glory go see me personally in the Netherlands. I'll try to keep it online for as long as possible though as I figure there are a lot of eager Deviants out there who want a look.

I hope it won't disappoint. Enjoy.

Awww...I love all of the stills that you have shared from this, but everytime I've clicked the link to watch it, it's not worked for me. I just know that my daughter (3 years old) would love it!

Thank you so much! It's very well done ~ and my daughter absolutely loves it. She's made me play it for her over five times already. Her favorite part is when you first see all of the bees flying over the field of flowers.

Fantasticly well animated and created!
Loved it very much from the animation point of view, not to mention the graphic's quality wich is superb to me!
Honestly: you really should develop this as a web project (web page only for the little bee story(s)).
Great concept, really should be allowed to grow in some how.
You have my support if you need any kind of animation/video/web creation help!

+FAV for the creativity!!!

Most definitley a !!

You really succeeded in creating the atmosphere of an animated story book. The whole world you created is incredibly beautiful-- very aestetically pleasing. The only thing I that I think would make it any better would be a little more variation in the voices between Tim, the rabbit, and the owl, but I know that's very difficult to come by being a student with limited resources. Having it told like a story book was great, too.

Overall...just... great job!!!

haha that is such a cute story. i love the part where the bees laugh at him... they're all like HEHEEHEEEE!! xDD
i also love the painterly technique on everything. you pulled the children's book thing off really well. the part with the owl looks the coolest out of everything, IMO. good job! are you proud?

And yeah... the part where the bees laugh I get generally the most responce with my audiences.

(*).(*) OMYGOSH!!!!
First of all:
Second: You did a great job!!!! I must have sat here for like the last 15 minutes just watching it over and over again. All the little kids i babysit and know would love to watch stuff like this. It's a story book come alive. I just love it...
Third: You friend Michelle has a beautiful voice perfect for this kind of thing. ^.^ makes me jealous.
Fourth: The music was sweet and lovely. It fit in very nicely.

And You animated and pulled it all together. *shakes head* Simply amazing. You just made it all fit so nicely and the movement of the screen with the pictures. Just...perfect. ^______^ I enjoyed every second of it and i plan on showing my sibblings when they get home.

Bakenius In reply to Jainatina [2004-12-22 18:00:32 +0000 UTC]

Could you tell me in detail how your sibblings reacted to the animation? I just showed it to adults up to now and their not quite the target audience now are they?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Jainatina In reply to Bakenius [2004-12-23 01:41:34 +0000 UTC]

My sibblings ages 9 and 11 thought it was rather neat. They sat and watched it played full on my laptop and their eyes never left the screen. My sister, the 11 year old, said it would be something that should be on the tv. My little brother, the 9 year old, said he liked the Tim the bee and watched it again. ^__^ I know some other younger kids i could show it too aswell if you like.

Rhovea [2004-12-22 15:57:13 +0000 UTC]

I LOVE it. Marvellous Leo, it would indeed make a great kid's book. My mother agrees with me on that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bakenius In reply to Rhovea [2004-12-22 18:03:53 +0000 UTC]

Sigh. It's not the point to make a book of it again. The whole thing is about getting the picture book in animated form.

But perhaps you're right... it also make a good kid's book. Perhaps I should think of a complete Tim the Bee merchandice line. Tim the Bee Happymeals!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rhovea In reply to Bakenius [2004-12-23 12:24:57 +0000 UTC]

Well, it is an awesome animation, very professional in my opinion.

I heard from an american guy that I know that he wouldn't mind stealing the idea and publishing a kid's book about it in America. Of course, he was only kidding, but he liked the wee bee a lot! Don't forget to make Tim a trademark if you decide to go on with it.

learn-to-fly [2004-12-22 15:43:09 +0000 UTC]

That was simply breathtaking; it looked BETTER than those that can be seen on television. The colouring was impeccable and the idea and narration were amazing. GREAT job, Bakenius. Please, please, please; MAKE MORE

Yay! I just watched it. It was awesome! Michelle did a great job on the voices too, and the music was very sweet.

So you animated the faces by rotating and skewing the layers? It all looks good except for Master Owl's face which looks a little bit flat as he turns left and right. But that's minor.

Impressive job! this was a college project, yes? has it been graded?

Your paintings were awesome. None of this flat cel-shading. I felt like it was an animated painting, really. (which it is, sort of) Very enjoyable.
And the mpg quality was quite good, actually. C'mon, 35 megs for three minutes

Gerat work Leo!

[i]Impressive job! this was a college project, yes? has it been graded?[i]

A collage project yeah. The teachers were very much impressed and mused about the prospect of my graduation animation I have to make in two years... since this animation is already quite up the standard over graduation animation productions here at school. Well, I say they just have their standards too low than. I plan to be a high-end animation professional in two years time.

[i]C'mon, 35 megs for three minutes [i] Y

eah, but it's just that I know how the uncompressed full resolution version looks like which is so much more vibrant and textures look so much better in the original. Oh well... I just have to find an animation festival near Lebanon to send the original to then.
