Personality

Hook is a strong-willed individual, not usually willing to listen to others unless he is in a situation where that would benefit him. He believes that everyone should be left to do as they please and that people shouldn't get in each other's way, especially not in his way. Hook hates being told what to do, especially if it goes against his personal beliefs. He will not needlessly cause trouble for those below him, and he certainly holds contempt for those that rule over others. Hook is excellent at intimidating and bluffing his ways through most situations, and is always more than ready to take action should words fail him. He’s a great leader, able to see the potential strengths of those that he works with. He has a bit of a short fuse, but finding what lights that fuse is a difficult task.

Background

James was born to a prostitute in the slums of England, and as such he never knew his real father. Despite the implications of his mother's profession, as well as the circumstances of his residence, James managed to have a somewhat decent upbringing. His mother loved him wholeheartedly, and would, unbeknownst to her son, forgo buying meals for herself in order to buy young James books to ensure he would at least know how to read. James’s life was relatively happy until his mother was killed, her life being taken while she and her son slept, all for a bit of food.

This event lit a fire within the adolescent. Instead of falling into sorrow, as most young men would, he returned the favor, taking the lives of the adults who had so happily eaten his deceased mother's food earlier that day, and setting fire to the slum, leaving what was once his childhood home behind.

James drifted through the streets for the next few years, stealing and looting until he was old enough to join his country’s navy. He figured that he could use the skills that he’d get from enlisting. However, James found that he didn’t really handle being bossed around all that well. He made it through training, arguing with his higher-ups the entire way, and taking sufficient punishment for it. Aside from his defiant nature, James was an excellent sailor, able to perform nearly every task one would need to while out on the waters. Despite this, he would eventually be punished in the worst way imaginable by one of his higher ups. There had been a blunder made by one of James's fellow sailors, one of them had forgotten to load cannonballs onto a ship, a ship that was unfortunately overrun and sunk by pirate not long after leaving England. One of James’s higher ups saw this as a perfect opportunity to get rid of the defiant young sailor, and had him court-martialed and thrown in jail for negligence of his duties.

James spent two long years locked away in a cell, though he was not alone. He had a cellmate, a portly, talkative fellow named Sam Smiegel. The two became fast friends, sparked by their shared interest in reading. The two would spend the time sharing stories their mothers used to read to them, and recounting and sharing the better times that were had in youth. Eventually, the two went at the idea of devising an escape plan from their dank prison cell. The two pretended to have James mercilessly beat Sam, and as a guard came into the cell to stop the beating, Sam shanked him in the ankle. After knocking out the guard, the two made their escape, and managed to steal a boat from the nearby docks. They made for Spain, a bitter rival of England and a common refuge for escaped criminals to start anew.

The two tried doing simple labor jobs for a while, but James still strongly felt the allure of the open ocean. He didn’t feel as though they had many options, still harboring a strong distrust of the navy, despite being in an entirely different country. Instead, James opted for a more extreme option. He worked long enough to purchase his own sword and gun, and signed up with one of the pirate crews that were in port. He said his goodbyes to his prison buddy, who had plans to resign to a easy farm life, and away he went.

James was quick to prove himself on the seas, quickly rising through the ranks of the crews he drifted in between. He kept this up for a few years until he managed to get picked up by the most ferocious pirate on that side of the alps, Edward Teach. Blackbeard. The time James spent amongst that elite crew would become some of his fondest memories. He felt so free, unaffected by the rules or wills of any country or king, he would only follow Edward Teach, the man he chose himself. James’s continued dedication lead to him attaining the position of bo’sun. Though none of that mattered after he discovered the truth.

After all his feelings of finally being free, he discovered that his captain was being paid by Spain for his services. James took this discovery on a very personal level, and he reacted how any reasonable twenty-something would to finding out that they've been lied to and profited from for the past five years of their life. He tried to kill Blackbeard, though this was no easy task. As the two fought, James discovered just why Blackbeard was feared by so many. The mans swordsmanship was unreal, and his footwork was so fast that James could have sworn there was more than a single Blackbeard. However, James managed to hold his ground, and escaped the ship with a handful of like-minded mutineers. Even Teach’s own bird Beatrice fled with them, much preferring James as he routinely showered her with treats. Being looked to as the captain of this small group, James suddenly found himself in a position of power.

He decided to take advantage of the situation, and lead himself and his newly found crew the freedom he yearned for while in Teach’s crew. Already a hardened group of criminals, the large group of men easily overpowered the crew of a merchants ship, and took it for their own. They named this vessel the Sea Devil, and began to make a name for themselves on the sea.

After many years at sea, and gaining reputation as a crew to rival Blackbeard's, James found himself happy again. He had formed his own sort of dysfunctional family for himself, his whole life out ahead of him on unknown waters. Though he felt a far off land calling for him, America and their vulnerable merchants were singing his name. He and his crew sailed for Florida, and it was in the waters between it and Bermuda that James’s crew found something greater.

Through the treacherous whirlpools and turbulent weather that occupied their path, James’s crew came across an un-mapped island. Seeing a greater opportunity than simple looting, the crew decided to land for the night and begin their treasure hunt at daybreak. This island was anything but normal. There were strange, incredibly large fireflies that kept their distance, and an overabundance of creatures below the water that the crew could only explain as manatees. Different kinds of animals attacked the crew that night, beasts that had no right being in the same hemisphere as each other. Wolves, bears, tigers, and even crocodiles stalked the crew throughout the night.

Though as the sun began to break above the horizon, the threats seemed to disappear, and the group was approached by an adolescent, a young boy in tattered green clothes with a sword on his belt. He very rudely introduced himself to the group of men as Peter Pan. Pan continued to demand that the group leave “his” island, and he drew his blade in what was clearly an act of intimidation. Of course, this was met with only mocking laughter from the crew of grown men. Once all the laughing had died down, James approached the boy.  He made a counter offer to the young man, a duel. The captain would personally test the youths sword fighting skills, and if Pan won, James and his crew would leave the island. But if James won, Pan would lead his crew to whatever valuables were on the island, and join his crew as a chore boy after.

To the mens surprise, Pan accepted, and the duel would begin as Hook’s first mate Donovan shot off a round. The pistol went off, and suddenly Pan was behind Hook. Not only was he behind Hook, he was floating in the air, laughing as James began screaming out in pain. In that single moment, the youth had sliced James’s left hand clean off. Pan flew off into the woods, yelling to the crew to keep their promise or he'd take their captains other hand.

The crew rushed their captain back onto the ship, trying their damnedest to stop the blood gushing from his stump. As they pulled away from the island, James lost consciousness. When he came to, they were long gone from the island, and his stump stung like it was on fire. The ship’s doctor Avdol had opted to sear the wound close. In the years that followed, James would become much more cruel in his methods, and acquired the prosthetic hook hand that would earn him his namesake. He chose to redesign his ships jolly roger, giving it hooks in place of the standard crossbones as an informal way of signifying his loss of compassion. He followed this change in symbol by sinking a naval warship, being very sure to kill every man that was on the enemy vessel.

This act began a half decade long span of unprecedented aggression from James and his crew, causing both his enemies and those close to him to forgo his actual name. Instead, this began the five year rampage of Captain Hook. The reason for this rampage was unknown by all except the crew members that witnessed that fateful day. Life had dealt James a gruesome injury, and it re-lit the fire he felt in his youth, changing him into a much more violent person. He once again began raging against those that were in his way. Just in this instance the criteria for being “in Hooks way” became rather easy to fill.

Eventually, after having fully recovered from his injury and training with his crew mates, Hook had his navigator plot a course for that island again to get his revenge. Only this time the seas were much more fierce to them. They were met with vicious storms and incredibly chaotic waters. While the danger was clear, Hook did not falter, and had the Sea Devil sail even further into those cursed waters. Eventually, men began to be swept off the ship by the heavy waves. This went on until it was only Hook left on the ship. He hung on for what felt like hours, until finally his grip loosened, and he was swept away into the depths below.

When Hook regained consciousness, he found himself alone in a fractured world. It was here that he met several strange individuals that he would become fast allies with. People like Saru, Corvo, and others that seemed to be ripped straight out of the books that his mother would read to him. While he had lost his crew, he found a sense of belonging among these folks that served to mellow him out of the rage he had felt before. Not to mention, he gained a sweet prosthetic hand.

Eventually, Hook encountered a black book, and saw the names of his allies on its pages. Overcome by both curiosity and worry, he grasped the book and suddenly found himself in an entirely different world yet again.

TLDR: Man too angry to die, instead goes world hopping after losing his dominant hand.
