So, exactly 3 months ago I posted this as a work in progress. Yep, it’s taken that long. This concept though started way further back than April this year. My original sketch I think I did back in 2017. It was originally gonna be a greyscale marker drawing but I didn’t like how I’d done the face so I abandoned it. Then in April 2020 whilst clearing out some stuff I came across the sketch and thought that if I re-drew the face it was still a sound idea. I’d also got into loads of Joe Benitez’s Lady Mechanika and started to develop a love for Steampunk so it became doubly worth the attempt.

This is kind of a challenge as there’s not a whole lot you can do with a steampunk Shulkie as she doesn’t really wear a mask or carry any weaponry so the most I felt I could do was put her in a Victorian outfit and then throw some cogs and gizmos in the background. Hopefully it works. I was originally going to cover most of her up as I wanted to stay true to the Victorian period when flesh on display wasn’t greatly approved of but I didn’t want to stray too far from her modern day identity either.

This is an original painted piece done on Bristol board with acrylic and pigma micron pens. I’ve really enjoyed the process as I’m very happy with how it’s turned out but I will never paint that many cogs and gizmos again! If I do any steampunk in future I’m doing it a lot more simplified and NOT painting it. 😂 Maybe I’ll go back to markers!
