Her magic. I did a series of these and whatever is getting sucked out of each pony makes them lose color and I think that's what happens when they lose their magic. Or it least the color dulls.
tbh though it didn't have much intent at all so you can take away from it whatever you like.

I've been doing thing differently with recent pictures. I've been coloring and shading all on the same layer as the lineart. It works pretty well, actually.
