---Prologue---

A dragon was flying. North, to the great  Palace of the Icewings. He glided on cold winds, carrying him over a ridge, and to his destination. He finally came into sight with it, the palace’s beauty mesmerized him. He gasped in amazement at the pristine structure, it was simply beautiful. The most beautiful palace that the icewings had. He flew closer, and observed the snowy landscape around him. Ice dragons flew in the air and walked along their frozen roads, into their homes. Houses and buildings littered the landscape below him, as he glanced down at some of them. He loved everything icewings made.

He approached the palace, and landed at a side of the wall surrounding the palace. The guards won’t know im here. He thought. They rarely checked this side of the palace wall, at this hour. Once he knew it was clear, he flew up the wall, and onto the balcony of the Queen;Queen Glacier. He had always tried to visit her since the first day he met her. She loved him, and he loved her. However, he was not meant to live in the ice kingdom, for he saw his death in the near future if he stayed. He had to tell her some of his visions before he left. He approached her sleeping silently. He lightly brushed her face. She awoke, and looked at him.

“Teal.” she spoke softly. She rose up, and hugged him. “Hello, my love.” Teal replied. She smiled. “Why are you up at this hour?” She asked, half asleep. “All Icewings must follow the sleeping schedule, you know.” Glacier said. “Even, you?” he answered back. “Your the queen, you can do whatever you please!” She smirked and wrinkled her snout at that comment. “Even, I, must follow that rule. I need to be energized and awake the next day, I can’t be drowsy and sleepy like you, on five hours of sleep.” She said. He laughed a little. He held her close, and they stayed like that for a while. A peaceful silence went in between them. “Well then, answer my question.” said Glacier, breaking the blissful silence. Teal sighed. “Actually, I came here tell you something.” He said. “Oh?” responded Glacier. Her eyes came open then, her ears perked up slightly.

He took a deep breath in. This was the moment. He had to tell her.

“I-I am not an icewing.” he said. “Ha!” she laughed. “Teal, of course your an icewing, love. Just because your in 5th circle doesn't make you less of an icewing.” She paused. “At least, in my eyes.” Her voice had softened in that last sentence. He knew she wasn’t meant to be with a commoner. It pained her that she couldn’t possibly be together with him just because of a ranking, that he could never be the perfect aristocrat that her family and tribe would have wanted. “I’m afraid you didn’t understand what I said, my love.” Teal said. “I am not, an icewing.” Glacier looked at him. “If this is about the rankings, Teal, I can raise you up into 1st or at least 2nd circle.” “There’s no need to be ashamed.” She said. “Glacier, you don’t understand.” He paused, and his face became serious. “I am a Nightwing Animus.” She had suddenly stopped trying to tell him about the rankings. She just stared. Gazed directly into his eyes as he said that.

“What.” She gasped. She started walking backwards now. He tried to calm her down, but in vain, it would only escalate. “Now, tell me… that’s not true.” her breath was shaking now. “Teal, please tell me that’s not true!” her voice had raised, and she was breathing heavily now. “T-Teal! Answer me!” “Are you lying?!” “Do you think this is some joke?!” She yelled. He didn’t look at her. He proceeded to take off his arm bracelet. This is for the best. He thought. He slipped it off his arm. His scales flashed, once, twice and then they stopped. They turned a coal black. His underscales shimmered  dark red in some places, and stars glittered on his wings. The night sky outside perfectly matched his scales. His red eyes met her arctic blue eyes.

“Glacier.” He spoke. “My real name is Crimson. I grew up on an island with my parents, alone, away from the other Nightwings. They didn’t want them to use me, and my magic.” He quickly put his arm bracelet on, he didn’t want the Great Ice Cliff’s spear to find his heart. Glacier was frozen. Tears had welled up in her eyes, and she had a talon covering her mouth as she sat down on her bed. “I-I can’t believe you lied. I can’t believe you are an animus! I can’t believe you are a NIGHTWING!” “I hope my tribe rips out your heart!” she sobbed. He walked over to her, and put one wing around her. She shook it off and got up, right in front of him. “How. Are. You. An. Animus? Are, Are you going to tell me we are somehow distantly related? That we are related to the Darkstalker?!” she asked. “How do you even have magic?! After all, your tribe stole it from us!” she snarled. “No.” He stopped her before she could say anything else. He got up and met her eyes. “We aren’t related, and surely not to the Darkstalker.” “The icewings weren’t the only ones.” She looked at him with wide eyes.

“In order for you to understand this, I must tell you a story. A story of three tribes.” he whispered a command to his bracelet, and a shimmer of light filled the icy room. A dark purple glow with white spots of light projected from a gem in his arm band. A white dragon, black dragon and a grey dragon all stood together, in unison. “Centuries ago, there were three tribes who had animus power. The icewings, Nightwings, and an Elusive dragon tribe which has since been lost to time.” “shortly after the scorching, dragons begun having strange powers. We know this today as Animus magic, or light and dark magic as known by the hidden dragons.” “Only these three tribes had the power, but discovered they could mix and mingle with other tribes, passing their genes of Animus magic down.” The light dragon walked over and hugged a newly formed sea green dragon. An egg appeared, and the dragonet hatched, creating a spiral of light from their talons. “Almost all tribes widely accepted this new found magic, but some distrusted it. The Nightwings started to distrust their royal family. My Grandmother fled from her family, one of the original bloodlines of magic. She went to an island were she could raise my mother in peace. When she left, there were no more Animi. Until, me.” The projection showed a Nightwing fly away from a palace, and watch her daughter hatch. It then stopped, and a shimmer of light from the gem stated the light show was over. “This is so much to take in.” Glacier said, touching her forehead. Teal walked over to Glacier, and hugged her. “I know. But listen a little longer. I’ve looked at family records, and I found a pattern.” “What?” Glacier said. “Animus magic skips generations. Sometimes, a family could have three generations of dragons all have powers, but hundreds of years later, the magic only pops up in one dragon. Meaning that the powers don’t go away forever, they are recessive, and pop up randomly. There could still be an icewing animus.” “Our dragonet could be an animus. I know it.” Crimson said. “Dont. Even mention that.” Glacier said. “How could we ever hatch that egg?!” “My kingdom would know immediately, and what if, she turns out to be a monster, with Nightwing abilities? Who would stop her then?” She sighed and a tear ran down her cheek. Crimson wiped it away. “She won’t be a monster. She will be a hero leading her kingdom into the light, like you will.” She turned and looked at him, and burrowed her snout in his chest. “I hope you’re right, Crimson.” She whispered, “I know I am. Glacier, I sometimes have visions of the future, and I know she won’t be mad.” He brushed wings with her. “She will be called Throat-Slicer, She will bring an end to her own prophecy, and save the seven tribes.” He paused. “Crimson, we can’t name her that!” Glacier snorted and whacked him with her tail. She smiled slightly. He smiled. “We will give her an alias, Icecrystal.” He said.

“That’s a better name, and I approve of it.” She smiled and pecked him on the cheek. Crimson got up, and spread his wings, heading for the balcony. “What about us?” Glacier finally asked. He turned around to face her and held her talons in his. “I can’t stay here with you Glacier. As much as you would like me to, I simply can’t. I would be killed if your tribe found out.” Her face looked sad. He hugged her one last time before leaving. “I know, you must leave. For the good of both of us.” She said. She sighed. “I know you will find another love, and he will be good. Perhaps, better than me..” He trailed off. “He pulled off a small bracelet from his left arm. “Give this to Throat-slicer. She will need this to hide her Nightwing scales. I enchanted it to hide her appearance.” “Thank you, Crimson. I love you, goodbye.” Glacier said. “I love you too, my queen. Forever and always. Goodbye” He spread his wings wide, and took off into the chilly night air. One full moon shone bright in the sky, that night, guiding him home.
