Description Tardigrades are represented by more than 1000 different species, and here are just three. They are distinguished mainly by the shape of their pharynx and the shapes of their claws. The central waterbear is the "standard", most widely recognized tardigrade, and not many people are aware of the different forms that this creature can take.

We should understand their biology further so we can develop an ultraefficient escape pod Β or maybe a micro spy drone

We already have a thorough understanding of how anhydrobiosis works in Tardigrades, but preventing radiation damage while in space is something scientists have been working through.

Fantastic illustrations here, I like the extent of which you have conveyed their anatomical contrasts. The one of Echiniscus Virginicus is the on I'm particularly fond of out of these. I absolutely adore tardigrades, they're easily one of my favourite invertebrates.

gah, i love water bears. I remember my sister asked for a microscope a few christmases ago so she could look for them but we never ended up having the chance to...
love the picture, and I really like how science-y your gallery is! I love these kinds of vintage-y looking illustrations... really captures this sort of curious spirit, like you're the first person to have ever seen these animals and you want to show them to the world

I would totally love a microscope too, I'd be tardigradin' all day errday.
I really love the way natural, earthen pigments look, maybe that's why they look kind of old-fashioned.

It is really nice to see realistic biological illustrations. I think it is becoming something of a lost art, and that is a shame.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Banvivirie In reply to EEHills [2012-01-24 01:11:29 +0000 UTC]

I agree, it is a constant defensive battle among colleagues; they say, "Wouldn't a photograph be better?" No, because an illustration captures and defines the essence, the nuances, and the details that the human eye seeks out to understand the subject. If you are trying to learn muscle anatomy you would not learn much from a photograph of an open carcass. If you want to learn about the wildlife of a biome, a single photograph will not exhibit every key plant and animal. An illustration can show a process, a cycle, cross sections, and species interactions not observable at a glance. That is why biological illustration still exists. It is still essential for us to understand and define the world, not just mirror it.

My supervisor didn't like it when I did some for my honors thesis and made me take them out. Granted, the scanner did not do them justice and they weren't as good as yours to start with, but he seemed to have something against them in principle.

I'm glad to see it being used.
