Description Mr. Billy Cobham in action.
I was a child when he composed "Red Baron": since then, he has been one of my favorite drummers... and I hadn't "discovered" jazz at that time yet.

With his unique drumming technique, Billy Cobham is one of the fathers of modern drumming - many drummers owe him so much.

On the tech side, I'm quite happy with this photograph. Despite being in the very first row of the audience, I was distant from my subject, due to the depth of the stage. So, I mounted a 1.4x multiplier between my camera and my tele. The shot was taken with an overall 390mm focal length (280x1.4): since, as usual, i had no tripod, I could only lean my elbows on the crowd control barrier to keep the camera steady. Now, considered also the moving subject and the shutter time (1/80 sec.), I am still surprised by the good sharpness of the image...

Amazing shot! One glance and one can feel the rhythm.

I love the way you capture musicians. In your "live music" photos I see so much of your own passion as well as theirs. I also deeply admire how you are able to enjoy the concert and walk away with these amazing captured moments: for me, it seems I can only handle one of the two roles at a time, either I'm enjoying myself as a spectator or I'm capturing it without really being a part.

Like many of my favourites in your gallery, this photograph shows a somewhat private moment of the artist, and it's almost like Mr Cobham was playing for himself rather than the audience. Absolutely wonderful.

thank you sincerely for your kind and thoughtful comment, olivia.
please believe that playing both roles at the same time is not easy for me. this is how it basically works:

if i don't like the concert (the music and/or the performance and/or the atmosphere) i usually can take only mean, uninspired shots.

on the other hand, if the concert captures me, when they start the encores i often find myself with just a bunch of images in my memory card.

well, i can add that balancing between these two extremes is not so easy. i think it happens because i am "driven" by my passion for photography and music, and my behaviour is completely different from the one of professional photographers, who have to get home with at least a shot that be suitable for a magazine or a newspaper. in other words, they are working, while i'm having fun
i'd love to see some shot taken by you at a concert. you have a very personal vision and the way you look at things and people when you shoot is very personal. i am sure you could take great photographs.

ha! you caught the moment, like a book cover, it can tell you the story - while you organize your shots, this one, negrini's and "on stage 20" should have a category for themselves
another sweet shot

i took this shot near the end of the concert. it looks like i am more productive in the last half hour. maybe it's because i happen to spend most of the time listening to the music instead of shooting, and when i realize there's a little time left i start working harder. or maybe it takes me some time to get in sympathy with the musicians... anyway i keep on thinking that my best shots are just lucky shots after all.
i'm really happy you enjoyed this pic, bro.

Sometimes music makes you feel so much passion you have to close your eyes to not let it overwhelm all your senses.
You caught this moment perfectly.

there is no music if there is no passion
