Description
A night on the town in my Equestria dreamscape. While Ponyville is a relatively quiet small town it is not without its night life, and one of the favorite spots for stallions and mares is the Bucking Mare tavern [link] . I mentioned the Bucking Mare awhile ago when I posted my sketches of Black and Tan. [link]

Now along with serving food and drink, the Bucking Mare offers several times a week live music and dancing. Often outside if the weather permits. Petina and I had been to the tavern several times since arriving in Ponyville but Carousel had never gotten a chance to go, and she wanted to go and listen to the music and dance for a few hours with some ponies.

So one warm autumn evening with the harvest moon rising in Luna's indigo sky, Petina, myself and Carousel found ourselves sitting on polished hardwood benches, and dining from trestle tables that had been set up outside for the evening crowd. Simple ivory linen cloth covered the tables. Lanterns hung on the outside walls of the tavern and along with large red beeswax candles on every table they cast a warm glow over the evening festivities. A large permanent outside fire pit area was being used for the preparation of food, and the tavern staff were cooking up some hearty fare for hungry ponies.

Big skillets with sauteed spicy, potatoes and onions were being deftly tossed. Vats of hot oil hissed and bubbled as deep fry baskets full tempura-style battered mushrooms, cheese sticks, sweet potatoes, green beans and zucchini cooked in them. A large griddle was cooking up apple crepes and grilled vegetable and cheese sandwiches. Hanging from framework over the fire, a large cauldron was bubbling away with a thick corn chowder. For later in the evening several pots full of plum oatmeal cinnamon crumble slowly cooked buried in the coals of the fire. It was an aroma that brought ponies from all around.

Over the sound of the music, dancing, singing, laughter, talking, cooking and eating, calls went out constantly for more pints of brown oatmeal stout, chilled mugs of copper apple cider, tankards of golden honey mead or glasses of ruby red spiced currant wine. Also a fresh batch of lemonade quenched the thirst of many a pony. Black and Tan was definitely a very busy pony, but the tips were good.

The tables were set up like an inverted "U" that created an open space for ponies to dance. A temporary platform against the wall of the Bucking Mare provided a place for the musicians to perform. This evenings band was made up of a burly earth pony stallion drummer, a unicorn mare was playing pan-style pipes. A rather portly pegasus stallion played a fiddle, and the earth pony from the egg sellers played the harmonica for the crowd gathered.

Straw was spread out on the open area where ponies danced with one another. Some were obviously couples but many a pony was dancing with any other pony they could find. For the most part the dancing was a mixture of folk and country line style. Although every once and a while a some pony would dance some solo number for the crowd.

Now I am all left hooves when it comes to dancing, but I enjoyed myself all the same. Petina and Carousel on the other hand were at right home on the dance floor, and many a lucky pony got a dance with them. At regular intervals the dancing would stop so ponies could return to their tables to eat, talk, drink and generally fortify themselves for another round of dancing. As one of these breaks began I noticed Petina go over the Carousel and whisper something in her ear. The earth pony got mischievous grin and nodded her head. The two mares then went over to the band and had a quick conversation with them. Then the white unicorn and the golden earth pony strolled out to the center of the dance floor.

At first almost nopony even noticed when the music began since the band would often play during breaks. but some did notice that it was not one of the regular tunes that the band played. It had strong, pulsating, rhythmic beat to it. Then they noticed Petina and Carousel out on the dance floor. After a couple seconds of the music the two mares started dancing.

Now back in her home reality Carousel , Carol Harper, is an equine exotic dancer who goes by the stage of Carousel [link] . She dances regularly at a club called The Menagerie. Of course when Petina is not a white unicorn mare she is an eight and half inch tall white female mouse who has also worked as an exotic dancing in the past [link] . As far as dance routines go it was pretty tame, however I am fairly certain that most of the ponies gathered at the Bucking Mare that evening had never seen anything like it before. Slowly discussions ground to a halt as the crowd watched these two young, attractive mares perform. Then someone in the crowd started whistling. In the audience somepony started clopping their hoof on the table. More ponies joined in and started chanting and shouting encouragements to the two mares. Petina and Carousel fed on crowds enthusiasm and as the tempo of the music increased their dancing became more passionate.

I don't know which pony started it, but as dance reached its climax the crowd started tossing bits out on the dance floor for the two mares. Much to the dismay of Black and Tan who saw her tip quota diminishing dramatically. With a final flourish the song ended, and after several seconds of silence a lusty cheer burst from the crowd. Carousel stood there with a look of sheer joy and accomplishment. Petina for her part had a happy somewhat smug smile on her face as she took in the applause. When all the bits were gathered up and some given to the band for their help and the evenings tab paid we still had a substantial pile of money. Petina told Carousel that she could keep them so she could finally start her business. Carousel has wanted to start a small delivery service for Ponyville and the surrounding areas since almost the first day she arrived. With the bits she gathered tonight she can make a down payment on buying her delivery cart and starting her business. Carousel was positively giddy with joy. By then it was getting late and we started the slow walk back to our cottage on the edge of town.
