Description These were the first character sketches I did for the "Defending the Princess" commission. When I am doing a commission for a client it really helps if I can get mentally on speaking terms with the character. That way I feel I understand them better and can more accurately portray them in the piece. This usually requires doing several general studies of the character to get an overall feel for their build, body language and personality of the character in question.

Also it helps me makes certain that I understand what the client wants from me and what they expect from the final piece of art. Sometimes before I start a final piece I may do up to 24+ preliminary sketches along with reading up on topic related to commission I am doing. In some cases it has been necessary to interview people with expertise related to the subject to get a better understanding of the topic portrayed in the piece. This of course is reflected as part of the cost in the commission.

I'm terribly ashamed of myself... After nearly five years, you'd think I have as big a commitment to drawing as you have.

Well keep this fact in mind. If I understand your comment correctly you have been drawing for five years. I have been drawing since I was 18 months old and I am turning 46 this year. So I have a bit of a head start on you. Also I have gone to art school and have commented a good portion of my life in the pursuit of becoming a better illustrator. If this is not path you've decided to walk in your life then do not fault yourself if your results are different. There are many paths one can travel and find equally rewarding but different results.

Not exactly since just five years ago, but the oldest furry pic of mine I can remember is from 2007. I don't have it anymore.
Thanks for the kind words

Well if you are still drawing here is one simple bit of advice I can provide. Sketch 15 minutes a day. What you sketch is rather irrelevant. Almost any subject matter will work. Heck draw your lunch in front of you. The important is to make it part of your daily routine. Don't expect masterpieces from this exercise. The point is to try and codify the act of drawing every day. This is how I have done many of the Equestria sketches is on my lunch breaks at work.
