This poem is dedicated to everyone who has dealt with
The world-changing grief that the loss of a loved one brings
Many empathetic hugs to us all this time of year
When that absence just seems omnipresent

It seeps into the floorboards
Where the echoes still remain
It hangs from all the rafters
And dwells in old picture frames

It casts stones in limpid dreams
That still ripple through our souls
Soft waves lapping silently
O’er life’s unexpected shoals

It nestles into empty furniture
With an inexpressible ache
It’s a thirst for absent laughter
That reminders never slake

It hides in the empty closets
Sequestered in hollow halls
Steeps through the dreaming sunbeams
Tracing secrets on the walls

Love haunts the empty spaces
The places tears still remain
The hollow voids in ribcages
And old memories in our brains

These memories are precious
Time’s passage cannot sever
We guard them deep in our hearts
Where they will live forever
