Description This is tutorial video will show one technique for creating a realistic glass effect for text or a custom shape in Adobe Photoshop.

Some months ago I also uploaded an HML tutorial on the same subject that also explains how to use the liquefy filter to enhance the effect so that it is completely believable. If you can to have a look at that you can do so at [link] and download the file to your hard drive for viewing.

I know it's been a long time, but do you by any chance have a link for the image you used? Thanks!

It was a pro stock shot that I got from photospin.com Bacicly you have to pay for it.

I still have it on file here since I keep all stock files I have paid for but can't send it due to copyright infringement.

I also just made a search on photospin and cant find it.

Ooooh! Now this could be very useful for me! I love your tutorials!

I'm not used to useing channels, masks, etc, so it might take me a while to get used to them.

excellent tutorial

two things i didn't quite get...
1. i didn't see why you had to rasterize the text layer
since it's mask was a smooth vector anyway.

2. didn't understand why you dragged the inverted
mask background layer under the text.

Love to use this technique for my future projects I'll have to brainstorm this idea for a while (see what I can use the glass effect in representation)

I wonder if this applies to After Effecrs as well? *ponders*

I can't say.

I am an After Effects Virgin but I do hear that you can animate Phtoshop layers in Afer Effects. It would be cool to watch the water layer float down and from the sky in this image and rest into place ontop of the black layer.

Have a great day and thank you for the comment.

I'll ask my instructor if it's possible; AE and PS are almost related to each other in manipulation techniques, especially with the layer effects and filters (it just involves a lot of animation as well, from simple steps to anal retentiveness involved with detail, which I possess, I'm sure )

And yeah, you can animate Photoshop images in After Effects, but they need to be in separate layers, and any layer effects you apply you want to keep, you gotta 'flatten' it (or 'rosterize', if that's thr right word) before importing into the composition.

Thank for the comment. As I have already said however i am not so sure that I like it. Perhaps I muttered about to much or it didn't make since to someone on the outside as to why were were doing some of the steps we were doing. Ya know?

Anyway thank you.

I will admit, it was a little lengthy for a tutorial. However if I was to show this to some of the artists around here learning Photoshop and Gimp, I do not think they would have too much trouble following it. It seemed to me that you explained the steps enough for someone to understand (or maybe that's just because I knew what you were doing whereas someone unfamiliar with this may not understand) Anyway, I still feel it is a good tutorial, and if anyone asks me how to do a glass effect sometime I will keep this tutorial in mind.

Thank you very much for the comment but in truth I don't feel so awsome. I have wanted to show this technique on video for a long time but I could never get the file size small enough.

Now that I have been able to I am glad to post it but it is not my best effort at making a tutorial by any means.

Thank you for the comment and please have a great day,

Barry
