Description This little tutorial explains or rather tries to explain how to extract an image from it’s back ground using the pen tool. Please bear in mind that this is not Hollywood and there was no script. This little movie was created more or less on the fly with very little thought before hand as to how I should do it.

I hope some one gets some use out of it,

This is great. ^^

I still am having problems. I set my anchor point, and I drag the path out, but how do I make it curve? I'm still confused and just got photoshop today. ^^ Thanks

push your mouse up or down as you drag left or right.

No I don't. This is the only place I have it. Can however right click on the little download icon to the left and choose save as or perhaps save link as depending on the browser you are using.

The file type is swf

I linked to this page in my tutorial's description, just for deviants' reference. You can find it here: [link]

*flail* THANK YOU!

Maybe I was reading the wrong pen tool tutorials, but I read about a dozen of them and NONE of the mentioned alt-clicking! I tried and tried and tried and kept getting these funky lines and it was driving me NUTS!

You have my eternal gratefulness for this tutorial!

BarryKiddPhotography In reply to honey-lemon-clouds [2009-08-14 16:04:13 +0000 UTC]

First off thank you for the comment.

As with many simple techniques this tutorial doesn't explain every thing.

Alt-clicking is needed when changing direction. =If the curve is smooth and continues like the apple in the tutorial it really isn't needed but I don't get into all if that because like many things we need to walk before we can run and Alt-Clicking will give the best results for someone just starting out.

Make since?

Thank you once more and please have a wonderful day,

Barry

Totally makes sense. I was reading tutorials on how to do line art with the pen tool, because that's more or less what I want to use it for, but every time I went to change direction, I got wacky lines LOL None of them had mentioned alt-clicking, so I'm *so* grateful that you did!

This is really handy! It's simple and what most people need. It has some really nice hints and tips that most people skip or ignore. And it's nice and slow so you can watch it and leanr from it and it doesn't go at 4 miles a minute!

Fabulous, thank you so much. The pen tool is one of those which I've skipped over so many times because I made those exact beginner mistakes you mentioned. This is a great video to get me over those fears. Thank you!

This is really great (I know i've said it before but i'll say it again.) My only problem is, when I'm selecting, it starts to fill the selection with the foreground colour and I don't know why it's doing that. Any ideas?

I'm glad that it helped out a bit. I'm sorry that the sound is so bad. A lot of the older movies like this one have really bad audio. I have considered redoing some of them but so far I just haven't done so.

Anyway thank you so much for the comment and please have a great day,

Barry

This is the best tutorial I've seen so far. I use PSP9 for lineart, but I figured this tutorial would work just as well for PSP, and it did. Worked like a charm.

I was going crazy trying to figure out how to use the pen tool. For so long I've just been using the straight line pen tool and just followed along the sketchy lines of my lineart, and it really made my lineart look shaky and very unsmooth. And I've looked at COUNTLESS tutorials that explained how to use it and none of them have helped. But your tutorial helped me get the hang of it in less than five minutes, so thank you!
