It's one of those anime that polarizes the viewer and draws metaphorical lines in the sand- you either end up hating it with a passion because you don't understand the hoopla, or you love it with a burning passion and can't get enough of it; there is rarely a middle ground to watching Evangelion.
Be aware that if you want to watch it, do it in this order:
Neon Genesis Evangelion (1995-96, 26 episode TV series)
The End of Evangelion (1997 movie; skip the first movie, Evangelion: Death and Rebirth because it won't add anything to your knowledge and is generally condemned by the fanbase for being confusing)
Rebuild of Evangelion theatrical series (technically not a reboot because it literally starts in the exact same place as the TV series, but ultimately goes in a different direction)-

it's worth checking out, but personally I prefer the classic TV show or manga version to the newer remakes or movies
