Description They say we always hurt the ones we love. Sometimes you can't help but hug 'em to bits, and sometimes you just wanna punch their head off. But don't worry, they also say it's all part of a good, healthy relationship.

So, what better way to hurt people than with a slap. Whoever invented it is a genius. Here're 5 reasons why I think so:

-A slap is intended to hurt the person's most valued feature: the face. The open palm is designed to cover as much of the sensitive skin of the face as possible.

-A slap doesn't dislocate your jaw or break your nose, but stings just as much. This means you can always slap someone over and over again without risk of permanent physical damage.

-A slap is generally considered a "class" form of violence as opposed to the barbaric punch. A person of high stature can get away with a slap but never with a punch.

-A slap hurts the ego more than a punch. That's why most people would rather be punched than be slapped in the face.

-A slap is always more dramatic than a punch(see deviation above ).

Now, drawing a slap isn't as easy as I thought, compare fig.1 and fig.2 and you'll see that the addition of those li'l details delivers much, much more impact. Literally.

(Don't worry, It's just basically me slapping me. )

personaly I see the first slap as being more comical, like it happened right after a really bad pick up line. But yeah, if your going for scene with more drama to it, and that version was at the end of the argument, it would be pretty boring.

This is very good to have here in the artist hospital. It'll remind us to think dynamic, which this is. I mean the first example I probably would of stayed with but when I saw the second one... It takes the cake. Great job

impact xD
ou're punny ^^

I really like the idea though--the concept is MUCH harder to execute! Idea is grasp; execution a lil elusive.

The important thing here is that you finally understand the thinking behind it, execution will follow soon enough.

I'll express my opinion on this if you wouldn't mind?
Of course first version is sorta boring but on the other hand it's closer to what happens in life. Also it looks natural.
Second version, at the first look is less boring but there is a little problem with it - it's way too exaggerated. And in my humble opinion girl who can do something like that is a karatist.
Also such a little thing - some people forget that not all ladies can perform something that was shown in second version of the slap - for example fragile build ladies won't be able to do that just because of their size even if they are angry as hell.
Yes, of course, it's fine if you know how to use it and where, but probably exaggeration is one of the biggest problem in western-style comics. It gives unnatural look to emotions.
Honestly if an artist don't know how to use it it will turn any good story into a soap opera.

True, anything can be annoying if done repeatedly and unnecessarily. ^^ My point here is to show the thinking that you can take things one or two steps further. Although just because you can doesn't mean you must. The comic medium is different from illustration and exaggeration is just one of the techniques artists use to stress an action or drive a point. There are other methods you can use like subtletly, or by skewing the angle, or weird camera angles.

*intrigued* I did not know that about a slap vs. punch. I always thought a punch was the best way of getting your point across. But I HAVE noticed that people who get slapped look WAY more pissed than someone who just got punched.

Plus, a powerful slap DOES make a lovely echo in a crowded ballroom, don't it?

! I hope you have LOTS more "exaggeration" pieces, I could really use them in my comic scenes
