SPOILERS... sort of.

I've been in fan theory mode since the 4th series of Adventure Time finished

Anyways, in the final episode of Adventure Time series four 'The Lich' - there was a small clip at the end of the episode showing an alternative-universe Finn the Human with Jake as a real dog. Although a lot of people have pointed out that Finn does get a robotic arm in the future (or at least he does so in the comics :I) - there is still the fact that Finn's facial features are different, where one of the Finn's has a more defined noes and eyes.

It got me thinking, what if that was Finn's Father before the end of the world? Like maybe years and years later he becomes a father just as the world is ending - only growing up to have a few similarities with his Dad. The hat could be a family present or part of a futuristic tribe or even just fashion of the time. Either way for whatever reason adult!Finn doesn't survive the war/meteor/magic casted - but managed to have enough time to hide his son in the nearby woods in order to protect him - which could explain how Finn in the Land of Ooo is found wandering the woods.
Meanwhile Finn's dog Jake could have mated with another dog and were expecting puppies, but changed in a magical mutation as an effect from the end of the world. Perhaps the dogs changed so much, they had forgotten all about their previous lives as dogs but had some subconscious memories that made the mom and dad dogs think about calling their son Jake and Finn 'Finn' after the human they had known in another life.

...or I could just be over thinking this and wanted to draw angsty pictures C:
