I love the highlights on the face and hair. But it sort of makes everything around it look a bit flat by comparison

Yeah true ngl. I need to change that in the future. The thing is clothes dont really have highlights when they're like cotton ish fabric so its hard to reference on myself. Any suggestions on what I can do on the clothes?

Well I'm not expert on color but try using different shades of the same color (or different colors that are darker in tone than the flat ones). It's all about using different tones. Also maybe look at real life references. You rarely see just one shade when looking at its form. Hope that helps. If not you can always try looking it up on YouTube
