Description
Baryonyx was a medium-sized spinosaur that lived in Britain during the Early Cretaceous, standing at roughly two and a half meters tall, with a total body length of 9 meters. Like most other known spinosaurs, it didn't often hunt for prey on land as shown in popular media. It's preferred source of sustenance was fish. Several aspects of Baryonyx's physiology also strongly support this hypothesis. It's long and narrow skull vaguely resembled that of a modern crocodile or gharial, with sharp conical teeth better suited for grabbing rather than cutting, and a long narrow snout that was probably dotted with dermal sensory organs. It's feet vaguely resembled those of pelicans, with webbed toes and an enlarged hallux (first toe) that touched the ground as the animal walked. Remains of digested fish were also found its gastric region. Due to these features, it is believed that Baryonyx was a semi-aquatic piscivore that could swim after its prey using its legs and tail to swim underwater. However, unlike it's much larger relative Spinosaurus, Baryonyx was just as good at walking as it was at swimming, due to its longer legs. According to acid-eroded fragments of iguanodont bone found in the gastric region of its ribcage, baronyx would have also occasionally fed off of carcasses.
Another distinguishing trait of Baryonyx was its hands. The first finger of each hand had an enlarged claw, which was noticeably longer than the rest of the finger claws. This claw would have been used to ensnare larger aquatic prey and to hold onto it while feeding.
