The Sylphoid species sheet is here!

First test of the polychromo pencils just on their own, it is unusual for me to color with pencils only because they usually cannot smoothly blend enough and many bits of white show through.

Polychromos seem to be definitely the best pencils for using on their own so far. Their texture allows the colors to layer over each other with more blending than prismacolors. However because of this darker or stronger pigments tend to dominate or blend easier. Their white pencil is almost useless if you use it over color.

Still highly impressed and value having these colors x3

Yay for more leaping gravityless sylphoids (despite the fact that I always draw them in motion they cannot fly xD) I sketched this on the way back from Toronto at the airport. It was one of the nicer sketches I had free to play with :3
This is Soris, my personal Sylphoid OC. her colors are kinda bland so looking back I should have done more to make her browns vivid and 'pop'.

Next up is the polychromos on marker test. This too was just a test x3 a pity my scanner really sucks and I cannot show you how well it succeeded. I really need a better scanner..

Do not use, copy, heavily reference or re-distribute this artwork in any way without my permission. Soris character and species © Holly Hindle. (YOU MAY NOT MAKE A SYLPHOID STOP ASKING ME THANKYOU).

The white color pencil in any collection is near useless. I only use mine, whenever, to stain-proof the the parts of a drawing that are meant to be white...and to augment how my gray blends in when I shade to make the white believable. I try to use it mainly so when my colors grow short the white won't still be as long as though I just bought it/them.

Supposing what you say is really true I'd love to get my hands on some of these special polychromo pencils. I also won't doubt that the real drawing causes jawdrops.

Its not very polite to say 'reminds me of a _____' even though I know this species isn't hugely original it has its differences from things it is similar to.

It's not really that unique of a creature. Eastern dragons are often drawn to look like wolves and have similar tails.

Not to say I think you think it's oh so unique or that you didn't come up with it yourself... but it's a little strange that you put that 'no one can draw one' when there are plenty of people who've come up with a similar idea... some even years before the internet was invented.

Bear-hybrid In reply to Super-Cheesepuff [2010-01-08 22:16:47 +0000 UTC]

If their not 'oh so unique' then it shouldn't bother you then should it? It is not just the physical appearance that makes this species what it is, most of it is in the behavior and life cycle.
People can draw them, I never said they couldn't but until I flesh out the species properly I don't want them making copyrighted original characters, understand?

Super-Cheesepuff In reply to Bear-hybrid [2010-01-09 02:17:22 +0000 UTC]

It bothered me because you disallowed people to draw it when you weren't the first to draw it. At least, that's what it seemed like at first. But I understand now that you mean you don't want people creating characters and calling/treating them as that creature.

I suppose it's just because I've been very annoyed by the 'you copied me' complaint lately. Sorry, it really wasn't necessary to comment.

It's a great drawing though.

If I may inquire for a moment, do you ink your sketches before you color them traditionally? I'm debating trying some traditional work since digital is starting to bore me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bear-hybrid In reply to Avyris [2010-01-02 00:03:44 +0000 UTC]

I usually ink pre coloring (definitely before markers) but sometimes with just color pencil I ink after the colors are down like with this one. Usually I just ink first, erase the pencil sketch then re-touch the lines if they need it after the coloring :3
