Ah, kudos to you for almost completing your PhD!
I don't think it's a bad pun at all, but then I'm not a very pun-ny person.
As for your query, there is a marked difference between the two, the red vs. blue. Quick initial thought, after looking at the blue one in Sta.sh, I thought the original too red. That said, it depends on the atmosphere/mood/tone you're going for. The one you have here (original) reflects an Autumn feel that goes well with the leaves. There is warmth here - as another person has said, it feels like sunset.
The one in Sta.sh is more appropriate on a "complementary" level with the way the blue contrasts with the yellow. That kind of blue reminds me of concrete, and there is a more sober/solitary, almost dark atmosphere with the way it feels cooler, more serious/strict, etc.
In contrast, the original captures the dog's expression - that of brightness, openness, and perhaps speaking of something more lazy/relaxed.
On an aesthetic level, the one in Sta.sh may be "better", just because the colors complement each other effectively, whereas the red in the original jars a bit with the yellow. That said, I think the original works with the atmosphere, dog's expression, etc.
For my part, I think you've portrayed the concept very well. I really like the way the hand comes out from an angle, and how things aren't precisely aligned, but more off-center. The way the letter reaches towards the middle, along with the mouth, reinforces the pun, and the meeting of two separate concepts (in more ways than one).
