My cat also likes my boyfriend since the beggining. It is very rare for him to approach someone he doesn't know well (he's quite anti-social), but he jumped over my bf's lap at the first meeting, so that was great!
However, my bf is more like a dog person so we're considering adopting a canine for our family once we have our own place!
