I'd like to think that's true but, based on what I read, in the series they are around 16-18 (Fluttershy and Rarity are the oldest and Rainbow Dash it's the youngest). I'm not convinced with that though.

Not exactly. there are some ponies who get their cutie marks early on, but that doesn't make them adults.
