“It all started when that cartoonist appeared.

He said he’d come to give our town ‘the opportunity of a lifetime,’ that he’d make our dreams come true.

He recruited the townsfolk to build a studio. And… some kind of machine.

My father… He spent forever working on the damned thing. I barely got to see him.

Then, when the studio opened, people around town started disappearing.

It was... It was strange. When they left, it was like I could barely remember them.

Did they even exist in the first place?

A week after it opened. That was when the creatures appeared.

They destroyed everything, killed so many people. My family… I- I took my sister and ran. I couldn’t look back.

I ran into Rob and Tobias. We started searching for survivors, but-

…There were so little of us left.

We decided to form a resistance. The Insurgence.

…

I’m going to kill them.

Those bastards…

…I’ll kill them all.”

  Penelope glared straight ahead, tears glistening in the corner of her eyes. Gumball looked up in shock of what she had told him.

    “I want to help.”

    Penelope snapped down to look at him, a tear trailing down her cheek.

   “What?”

   “I want to help you.” Gumball looked down, “I know... I know I can’t even begin to understand how you feel, but I know what it’s like when someone you love is hurt.” He looked back up, determination in his eyes. “And I want to help you fix this.”

   “…” Penelope stood up, expression unreadable as she looked at the toon. “You’re right.” She walked to the door, turning to glare at him before she left. “You don’t have any idea how I feel.” She slammed the door shut behind her.

    Caroline ‘sat’ on a chair in the corner, deep in thought until the slamming door startled her out of it. Penelope stalked in and Caroline jumped up to float over.

    “Oh, Penny! How did it go?”

Penelope groaned, leaning against the door.

    “Aside from being a pain in the ass, uneventful. He isn’t working for them, and he isn’t the monster.”

    “So why is he still in there?”

   “I don’t trust him.” Penelope crossed her arms, and Caroline looked at her, exasperated. As the two stood there, Gumball piped up from the other room.

“Can you please untie me now?”

“No.”

   The two could hear him grumbling in annoyance at the answer. “Stupid Not-Penny. She’s the one that hit me, she should be the one tied up-” At that, Penelope threw the door open, ready to tear into the toon that he was the one who showed up unannounced, and the leader of The Insurgence wouldn’t be caught dead letting a creature that similar to their enemy walk free. Before she could, the three heard crashing and yelling from outside. Gumball pinned his ears back, and Penelope looked ready to fight as door burst open to reveal a bleeding Robert clutching a gash on his side.

    “IT’S HERE, WE NEED TO RUN NOW!” He yelled, turning around to hold the door as something huge slammed into it from the other side. Caroline jumped back, looking at Gumball in concern.

    “But what about him?!”

    “I’ve got it!” Penelope pulled out a pocketknife, slicing through the tape and handing it to Gumball. “Gumball, follow us!” Caroline and Rob ran to the side, Penelope and Gumball aiming to follow before what was on the other side burst through the door with a screech.

   “I-Is that..?”

   “Yes,” The two stared at the monster as it stalked forward, head lowered and tails lashing. “The Demon.”
