Description The ORIGINAL painting, in frame, is for sale! I also have prints available for those of you who wish to just own a print. But can't you imagine the original hanging on your wall instead of a simple print? ^__^
Don't forget to use the code BEEDASHOPPER during checkout for 10% off of your order!

----------------

TOTALLY finished! I just never got around to editing the description to reflect it MONTHS ago.

I've varnished it with a high gloss dammar varnish, let the varnish TOTALLY dry, and finally framed it in a gorgeous dark wood frame.

---------

And now for the paintings info:

14x11 inch Nasco canvas panel
Winsor and Newton Winton and Reeves oil paints, using liquin, refined linseed oil, and standing linseed oil.

The original painting will be on display at AnimeNEXT 2011, at my table in the artist alley.

I think I remember you a bit! I saw so many people that weekend, I can't quite remember, but I vaguely remember you. ^_^;

And thanks!

How was the rest of the convention for you?

the convention was fun, as it always is. missed the rave though. As an amateur artist i kinda get happy when i see other artist doing well. Its encouraging. I dont know many artists myself so if u wouldnt mind i'd like to keep in touch on DA

That's a-okay with me! I love meeting fellow artists as well. It's kind of like an adrenaline high that you don't come off of until you kind of leave their presence.

Actually, from what I've heard, you really didn't miss all that much with the dance. I read that one of the DJ's played nothing but dubstep. Dubstep is fine, buuuuut how DOES one dance to that? XP

I was only wondering if this was completed the other day ^^
This is really amazing and I love the design of the unicorn!
I used to use acrylics, then got thrown in the deep end with oils for about a year ago and then I've gone back to acrylics. I miss the effects you can achieve with oils but certainly not the drying times! (I spent about 6 months working on one painting but left it alone for a whole month during summer. It was so hot and humid :S)
I can't wait to see what you come up with next!

Thanks. ^_^
I still need a hell of a lot of practice with oils, though. Trying to come up with an idea for the next painting, something that's going to challenge me and force me to learn more techniques.

But I'm drawing a blank. XP

Simply gorgeous. My boyfriend uses oils and I'm fascinated with how long they take to dry (I use acrylic because I'm a horrifically impatient creature) so I give you full credit, first for using them, and second for using them so well!

I love the background, the variation of greens and shadows really make the unicorn stand out. And his pose! Ahh... you did such a good job. I find frontal poses scary though so I greatly admire them when they're done nicely. ^^

And he's so fluffy I just want to pet him. Teehee. I may have to save up for a print.

Danke!

I really need more practice, though, and I can't believe how many brushes I really need to achieve fine detailed work!

Going to have to pick up a 0 round or smaller soon. So used to being able to create fine details AND large ones with just one brush, as watercolors, inks, and dyes are normally my mediums of choice.

How many brushes and tools does your boyfriend have for his oil paints? And could you ask him a question for me? Would he recommend gessoing and sanding a canvas smooth before applying paint to achieve crisper details, since the canvas materials texture shows through even on a pre-prepped canvas or tile?

ScribeCat In reply to Bee-chan [2011-04-25 01:07:02 +0000 UTC]

Practice is always best. I so wish I could be a master in a day. lol

Ah, you can use one brush for an impressionist's style but he uses as many as he needs. I do the same with acrylic. It's whatever you feel comfortable with but all of his practice, in his classes, are done with one brush. The first few layers especially are always done with a thick brush. Fuss with detail and tiny brushes as a last step.

If you're looking for super smooth, don't sand it, never sand it... he seemed pretty adamant about that. Gesso, yes, but the smoothness is achieved by thick layers of paint. The old master's style uses 7 layers, he says at least 5 layers and don't forget a base layer/wash to tone the canvas. Apparently you can't be stingy with the paint. And definitely use linseed oil to cure it so it doesn't crack.

He feels awkward now because he says he's an amateur and shouldn't be giving advice. So take it as you will.

Bee-chan In reply to ScribeCat [2011-04-26 00:18:11 +0000 UTC]

Tell him thanks for the advice! And if he knows what he's talking about, he can very much give advice, especially since he's been working in oils longer than I have. XP

So no sanding then? Alrighty, going to have to follow that advice for the next painting! And oh god, yes about linseed oil, I will NOT paint without linseed oil or liquin. Those two mediums are a must have in my oil paintings. And if I want a thicker / textured paint, I just use standing linseed oil, since it's thicker than refined linseed oil.

He hopes what "little" he knows will help.

Yeah, I know the trials and irritations of canvas showing through even when I paint with acrylic... layer, layer, layer. lol Pain in the tail but that's paint for you.

Good luck!

This is amazing! And so cute! In a strange way it reminds me of my cat, Kairi. I'm not quite sure why..... Anyway I love it and I think you have captured my favorite creature better than many artists I've seen in a long time. Is this going to be available as a print?

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

Bee-chan In reply to NichiTsukinoko [2011-04-24 19:26:38 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's actually available NOW as a print and other things here on DeviantART. I'll also be making prints of it for AnimeNEXT, so you'll be able to purchase said prints at the convention in June, and at the Piscataway Public Library, July 23rd ( they're holding a mini anime and comic art convention ).

and the unicorn is kept to its original description in folklore, absolutely stunning.

Bee-chan In reply to Moondancer-stargazer [2011-04-24 21:15:13 +0000 UTC]

That's what I was hoping for. I know the original descriptions say that the horn should be longer, but hey, artists rendition and all that.

As much as I like horse like unicorns ( horses are gorgeous creatures, no question about it ), I simply love the idea of a unicorn being more deer or goat like than anything else. Makes them feel a little more wild, a little more ethereal. I can even imagine a young unicorn being about the size of a dik-dik.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Moondancer-stargazer In reply to Bee-chan [2011-04-25 01:10:12 +0000 UTC]

it looks a bit more realistic with the shorter horn, more biologically possible seeing as a little thing like that would be incapable of walk with a large horn

oh I agree horses are beautiful, but yes the ideal of a unicorn being more deer like or goat like (depending on area of folklore) gives it more of an association of wilderness and wild magic. yes, that would be an adorable sight watch a dik-dik sized unicorn trotting on wobbling legs.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed! The Farmers Almanac says that this summer promised to be cooler and dryer, so it should be the right kind of temperature and humidity for the oils to dry a little faster.

Of course, I'm new to oils, so I could be completely wrong, and probably am. XP
