Description
Linette is a Myrmidon soldier from the west. She is a bright, kind, and incredibly just young knight- hard-working and skilled with an array of blades, though she prefers to solve quarrels with words and understanding. She was left with and raised by members of a church. She entered customary Myr military training at a young age (14-16) as part of her education and was stationed in a small Goblin slum. There, she met a young goblin named Constance, who was apprenticing as a doctor. They later married, and Constance still lives and works there and Linette visits as often as she can between her duties away from her.Linette shown here is 25 years old, and a lieutenant serving under her commanding officer and dear friend, Garsend.

Is it just me, or is every time I see Linette, her "glorious lion's mane of fluffy awesome"™ gets just a little bit bigger... or fluffier.... or awesome-er?

I can't be sure to be honest, it felt like she had the longest hair in the magical girl drawing she first appeared in, but maybe it's thicker now than it was then.... Hmm!! o_o I should go compare.

(Seriously folks, don't talk about torching someones hair without permission- its as creepy as hell!, I know plenty of black girls for whom this is a big problem in real life, its not a nice thing to do! )

gosh i am absolutely in love with her armor. or her outfit or suit or whatever you want to call it-- it's just gorgeous and that deep red goes so lovely with her skin tone. and her sword good lord, the detail on that handle and the hilt is absolutely gorgeous

I really want to like her, i really do, but i just can't. It's feels like everything is the same size. For example, we have this big parts with a basic color (red, white, and her skin color), and then we have small small details that all have the same feeling. The way the belt and the waist thingy of the skirt are just in the middle, it kinda 'cuts' her in two identical parts and it's boring.
I feel like this character would stand a lot if you make her shorter, for example, and adding more contrast in the face. For example, making her skin darker and her hair lighter or her eyes darker or a different color so they would stand out. Also (and this is totally personal), taking into account the magical girl feeling she has, I would make her skirt a loooot puffier, to exaggerate the triangle shape that you give her.
Sorry if this sounds as if I would like to change the character, I don't want that at all, I just think you have a great idea with some little flaws that stand out for me.
Tho, I really like this in a technical aspect. The lines and color are amazing.

Well... Her simple "boring" symmetrical outfit was indeed on purpose... it's a military uniform. She's very orderly and rule-abiding so all of that was really on purpose. I am sorry it doesn't appeal to you though...
However I have no interest in changing her height, her facial features, or the color of her skin or eyes for the sake of making her design more "interesting"... I don't think that's very necessary to suggest. Neither her hair or eyes were meant to stand out exactly, but I don't think the fact they are a similar shade means they can't or don't stand out in their own way. Also, she's not a magical girl nor is this her magical girl uniform- Her very first original design was in the magical girl challenge yes, but I used the character in a different genre entirely, hence the outfit change.
I appreciate the critique, but a lot of it does seem like personal preference rather than a character design issue.

When I say to change colors or something, it's just to add a little contrast, to focus the eye a little. But then again, if your intention is not to do that, more power to you.

I'm pretty sure the even proportions on Linette were intentional. You'd probably not know this since the character is rather new to you, but Nette's supposed to be a very orderly, upstanding citizen. Like using symmetry in a design, even and identical elements can be less "dynamic," but that doesn't make it less effective. If you're getting the feeling of slightly "boring" and "standard," that's actually fitting, because she's a soldier. She's supposed to look standard.
Beyond that, she's also a heroic figure, classically knight-like in personality, so she isn't a particularly "exciting," edgy, or anti-heroic personality, if that makes sense?
If the effect isn't something that's up your alley or suits your tastes, that's one thing, and you're completely inclined to your own opinions. But it's not really a flaw in the design just because it doesn't strike your fancy.

Oh, to be honest I didn't get that feeling when I saw the design. She just felt.. well, all over the place. Like, I didn't know where to look. Of course, not knowing the story it's a little hard to actually tell. By what you guys say, she looks like a main characters, and usually you want your main characters to be iconic?
It's not just about a character being "boring" whats worries me, but the fact that the character may be overlooked. But if that's intentional, great.
And jump in all you want, I like design talks.

Hm, you specifically said it was boring in your first comment so I thought that was the problem. Now it seems your issue is that her design lacks focus and will be overlooked because of that? Am I understanding you correctly?
That's really interesting, because Linette's value structure is a pretty tried-and-true design used by professional concept artists. I guess it really is just personal taste in the end.

I really love Linette's design. I love that she breaks the stereotypes I feel I've, unfortunately, grown to think of automatically when I hear the phrase Knight. She's surprising and opens my mind to new amazing designs for things I've had these preconceived notions about. I really enjoy that your characters break boundries and help me to break boundries in how I think of things.

I feel like when you designed her you chose ovals as a repeating feature. Her knee guards are oval shaped, the guard on her sword is oval shaped, same with her hair and shoulder guards. I mention this because I always had a sense of straight lines in your older works? I don't know if your style changed and I just wasn't paying attention or what but I do like the character. I especially like the big, curly hair since it's something I want to do with mine because I've never had the guts to straighten it.

Hmm, maybe? When I do armor like that- joint guards especially, I typically make them round to contour to the body. I do have a few that don't do this, with more pointy armor like her ... But my style has always been heavy on curves and flowing strokes though, so I can't really think of any other instances where I had especially straight or rigid armor! Or angular/straight shapes in general

I really like Linette's design, she emanates this golden aura that makes her a gorgeous, lovable character. (I imagine her riding off into the sunset with a blushing Constance ahaha)
All the little details really make this from the hair strands to the nicks on her plates to the highlights. It's really well done and immensely impressive.
Can't wait to see more of your characters from this Universe!!

I had so much help from Naf but I think I'm finally getting a feel for it myself too, and it's pretty amazing how it looks more and more natural with my work. Gah!!
