Description
Lady sat on her favorite rock, gazing at the sunset glittering off her lake. Slowly, the great day ball sinks, until the last gasps of sun are obscured behind the mountains. Like so many times before, the stones shed their warm glow for cool blues and greens just before settling into the nightly ritual. A cool fog descends into the valley and a cold wind begins to blow.
Lady rises from her spot to begin the short trip back to her "home," when she notices from the corner of her eye, a golden reflection. She turns to see, what can only be described as a small sun-colored flame dancing on the lake. She stares in amazement as it slides this way and that across the mirror surface, steaming and shrinking each time it jumps. The flame grows so low, that a whisper would snuff it out, but just before the flame extinguishes itself, a smaller flame jumps up and out onto the surface! There it grows into a larger flame, only to begin the cycle anew.
"Very funny Ikkit!" She thinks aloud, "You can come out now." Lady looks around the brush, searching for the tell-tale white mask among the reed-like shadows. Nothing stirs, not even the crickets. "I like the new trick," she inwardly chuckles, "Who taught it to you?" The fog continues to roll in, veiling the lake with silver.
And then...for the first time that night, she hears a child's giggle. Old habits kick in from The Time Before and Lady crouches low. Where are they hiding? Could they be controlling the flames? How did she not hear them approaching?
She surveyed the lake, looking for any sign of the intruder, when…she again noticed the flames. A flame jumped and split and the laughter increased in volume. "Could it be!" thought Lady, "Could the giggling…be coming from them!”
Even louder laughter! “She got it!” one said, “Come play!” said another as it skipped, jumped, and split. “Oh yes! Come play!” the flames continued to giggle. And then, without warning, the flames started to jump across the lake.
This, in of itself, was already extraordinary. Dancing flames! Have you ever heard of such a think? What happens next is even more shocking. To this day, Lady doesn’t know why she did what she did and if she thinks too hard on the subject, her mind goes a bit fuzzy. But without skipping a beat, Lady began to float over the water towards the receding lights.
“Wait for me~!”
