🌀 Shoot notes:
A lot of our photos for this shoot are stylized because we were trying to get the look and feel of FFX graphics. Thought I'd share this one that's a bit more simple, to showcase the work I put into the makeup and wig styling.
Backdrop and lighting
The background is a set that Julia (who cosplayed Yuna with me) and I built with layers of different fabrics, and blue and white LED lights scattered around. It was a bit of a funny experience setting it up because it's the first time we attempted something like this. In the end we really liked the effect it gave! It also provided a nice diffused, blue-tinted backlight for some photos. The rest of the light setup was handled by Reskiy. It was so flattering and it makes me wish I could walk around with it and always look like a game character. Hahah!
Wig and eyebrows
My base wig already had a nice mix of blond fibers, so the extra stuff I had to sew in were just some short dark brown wefts to create the illusion of Tidus’ characteristic dark roots. I shaded my eyebrows into a shape that’s similar to his, then topped it off with light brown brow gel to make my eyebrow hairs stand out better in pictures, as well as provide a little highlight to give them more dimension and unify the colour with the wig.
Makeup
For the rest of the makeup, I looked at this render ointer: i0.wp.com/nerdswole.com/wp-con… a lot for reference. I basically looked at the shadows and highlights on Tidus’ face and did my best to recreate them on my own face. I put on some bronzer to warm up my complexion and a highlight powder to make it look like I’ve been spending a lot of time in the sun, like Tidus.
Something I always noticed about looking at the previously mentioned reference image was that Tidus’ lips looked kinda dry and patchy, hahah. I thought it must also have something to do with being out and exposed to the elements? It seemed like a characteristic trait, so I decided to copy that as well by using some concealer and matte lip colour.
Another thing I distinctly remembered about Tidus in the game cinematics was that he had these light-colored eyebags(?) ointer: www.finalfantasy.net/wp-conten… so I tried to recreate that by running a highlight pen under my eyes and adding some shading to emphasise the natural folds I have under there.
Although Tidus' eyes are a more subdued blue in some cinematics, I chose stark blue contact lenses based on his brighter eyes in one of my favorite shots of him ointer: pixelattack.net/wp/wp-content/…
Cosplaying game characters like this feels really refreshing because there’s so much tone and detail I can work with, as opposed to when I’m trying to emulate the look of anime characters. I find it a lot of fun and I look forward to doing more Final Fantasy cosplay!
