Description

    Aunen's eyes snapped open. The bright flash and subsequent purple glow almost causing the sleeping mogi to fall from his perch high above the glade. Bewildered, he glanced down at the forest floor. All sorts of other mogi seemed to be converging towards the source of the glow. An ever curious bunch, Aunen mused, not that he wasn’t also intrigued by the pulsing light which came through the gaps in the canopy.

            Taking a moment to stretch out, Aunen waited until he could no longer hear the sounds of feet moving over the moss covered forest floor before sailing down and landing with the slightest bounce in his step. Something new in the glade. He liked the idea of that.

            Keeping to the plentiful shadows, he scurried through the underbrush, taking no heed to the sideways glances of the other mogi. He wanted to say the looks and whispers didn’t bother him, but with each masked figure he passed he hunched his head down more and plastered his wings against his side.

            A familiar mask appeared through the bushes, and Aunen relaxed a bit.

            “Monarque!”

            “Aunen! Have you seen it yet? There’s rumours it’s a portal, they say the tree is there. There’s also a mognificent who apparently came through too, isn’t that amazing?”

            Aunen had stopped listening at portal. Perhaps this was his chance to get out, go somewhere where the others didn’t look at him with fear for his bat wings.

            He shook his head. “No, I haven’t. Hanging back a bit while everyone else investigates, y’know.” Monarque nuzzled his mask in sympathy.

            “How about I scout ahead for you?”

            “Sure, thanks Monarque.” As soon as her grey tail had slipped through the bushes, Aunen turned and scurried up the nearest tree. He was going to find out where this so called portal led if it was the last thing he did.

This is the first few panels of a 16 panel comic I intended for this prompt, then realized I bit off a bit more than I could chew as far as finishing. I'll finish it soon, just not for the prompt.
