Obviously, a conventional seaborne Kraken was not enough... but a Kraken from the Astral Plane had to surf its way to our dimension.

Yes, ordinary krakens don't have enough of an advantage. Spectral inter-dimensional ones that can hurl lightning bolts from the sky then retreat to another plane were necessary to teach humanity a lesson.
Now if only we could get a picture of it attacking halflings.
