Description
This is made for the ten years from now contest at . The premise was to make an artwork symbolizing where you as a person or artist want to be in ten years.

I decided to make the piece with a combination of cross stitch, embroidery and quilting techniques to symbolize my aspirations to be a designer of quilt and embroidery patterns in 10 years. The tree is made by appliqueing small pieces of leftover fabrics from other projects. The shape of the bark is emphasized with dark brown embroidery floss. The leaves and the little bird are made with cross stitch stitches.

I chose to make a tree because, to me, those symbolize stability, strength and finding a place where I can stay and feel at home, 'rootedness'. Often I feel the urge to fly away like a bird and forget about all my problems and struggles and be free of responsibility, and all my fears. However, that is no way to live a life because that will leave me alone and restless for the rest of my life. There are things I want from life and when I want to achieve those I have to trust myself and work through the fear and not be a bird who flies away with the first sight of trouble. To me, birds symbolize the kind of freedom that comes from detachment from people and responsibility and I don't want that anymore. Therefore, in the coming years, I hope to grow more like a tree which is strong and can take everything life throws at her. As you can see, the bird is sitting in the tree in ten years and is finally at peace. I did include the bird because the part of me that wants to fly and explore new things will always be a part of me, but doesn't have to rule all my decisions. Birds also symbolize the love to explore new places and to strive for new experiences. Being a bird is not a bad thing when it comes from a basis of strength. The bird is purple to symbolize power, ambition, peace and creativity.
