There are non-princess characters with less skinny bodies... Nani from Lilo and Stitch, Esmeralda from Hunchback.. I can't think of any more right now. D:

Why F you? Weight loss to be fit is healthy! they are cartoon characters so relax. tight and toned is healthy. it isn't like they are promoting anorexia or bulimia, all of the girls have a healthy appetite in the movies and all are shown eating at least one healthy food.

At first it was an honest mistake.... but then I realized she was drawn that way because of the style of the movie. I would include her, but I'm too lazy to make a new picture Lol

if the disney princesses were real, they would be too skinny to menstruate :/

With Sleeping Beauty you have to take into consideration the era it was set in. corsets did no women justice to their bodies.

Pocahontas, Mulan, Cinderella, Snow White, Merida and maybe Belle. You think Rapunzel is decent? I think she's the skinniest out of all of them! But no female character has yet to bet Megara.

The only reason Mulan appears bigger is because of her flowey dresses and armor. The matchmaker even called her too skinny. (Too the point that she may not be able to bare children)
Rapunzel is computer animated which makes her appear bigger but she is drawn to be a size 2-0 like all the other princesses.
Snow white is about a woman's size 6 maybe 8 in her original film(and was very flat chested) but in all recent merchandise she is shrunk to a size 2 and her bust size is increased.

Alice, Mulan Pocahontas, Snow white realistic sizes.
If we are talking about proportions, then add Giselle and Rapunzel.

It's not about "realistic"
It's about diversity all of them(besides snow white) are size 2 or size 0
I'm dress size 2-0 myself but is annoying that they all are drawn to look pretty much the same.

Yes, well as many people think, being a normal size isn't healthy. You must be underweight to be healthy and beautiful.
Don't get me wrong, naturally skinny is just as beautiful as naturally bigger, but any size bigger than a 2 or 3 is "unhealthy" now a days. I agree, it's annoying.

I can't find them now, but Ariel was modeled after real teenage girls. There are model sheets of her with her legs, which are thicker and her stomach is at the right proportions. I think after so many years of marketing her, she has become frailer and frailer. However, her eyes were always super huge.

I did see a clip of animators observing some model doing Ariel's movements for practice. It was actually pretty informative and they showed clips of a woman doing 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'Cinderella'. They all were pretty thin to my eye.

Based on the fashion norms of the period they represent, Cinderella, Aurora, Belle, Ariel (In dresses) and Jane would all have been wearing corsets. As women from those periods could get a waist of 15 inches, they are not at all out of line in appearance. For comparison, Marilyn Monroe's waist was 28 inches.
As for the thinness, look at drawn cartoons from the 1700 and 1800s and you will the princesses shown are positively pudgy.
Humans always idealize the human figure from what it is. Look at the Venus of Willendorf or Egyptian carvings and tell me the Disney Princesses are more unrealistic.

They all have an effect of unrealistic proportions

That is my point. Human beings like pretty things, not real things. They exagerate their favorite things in real life and in art. No one would watch Disney if they looked like normal people. Consider corsets, food binding, boob jobs etc. Heck, studies show that babies will stare longer at a picture of a conventionally atractive face than an unattractive one.

Megara, she just had big hips, for the most part she wasn't scrawny. But Jasmine is kind of short so she may be in proportion to her body...

If they really were that skinny, thier bust size would be proportional to thier waist size i.e the smaller you are around the less you'll have on top. Now I understand this may not ring true for all women, but generally this is true. Also not all women have the same "hourglass figure", however as pictured here it appears that Tiana and Jasmine's heads are too big for thier bodies. The only person who looks somewhat proportional in this picture is Aurora (I chalk her waist up as to being a result of the corset in the dress-not unusual considering the time period during which she lived).

BelleSura In reply to MichelleShannon [2011-09-21 17:55:10 +0000 UTC]
Hm... excellent observation. It's true that Aurora's time period would include corsets but just look at her. That is kinda unrealistic.
But thanks for that comment. It is very thought provoking.

Belle looks decent, it's just the dress that makes her look skinny. And Kiara looks a decent weight for a lioness (yes to those people who protest, Kiara IS a Disney princess.)
