Once upon a time, in what was to become Peru, a terrible curse was put upon an exile; the individual was to become a Wadnpi, or an oncilla; a small agile cat native to the area and live apart from humanity in the wilds. It became lore that to hunt Wadnpi was to court misfortune, that it could even lead to the spirit taking away any children the hunter may have.

Centuries later, and a variation of this curse has perhaps diluted over bloodlines, for 26 year old Maria Pérez has lived one life for two beings since her early teens; she is embued with the spiritual essence of the Wadnpi.

This ancient curse has become a boon of sorts, allowing her to become a, somewhat brutal, crimefighter; her powers include incredibly agility and climbing skills, keen senses of sight, smell, hearing and even a sensitivity to anything mystical or magical, and the rather handy ability to conjure deadly golden claws from her fingertips.

During the day, though she can access her powers if she focuses, Maria's gifts are a pale shadow of what she's capable of during the night time; she's still gifted but not remarkably so while the sun's still up.
With the night comes full access to all her abilities plus a change in her teeth and eyes to more resemble her feline benefactor.

Unfortunately, the use of her powers also comes with a powerful bloodlust; she urges to hunt and it will not subside until blood has been drawn from her quarry. This, along with a hatred for injustice and gangsters in particular, is part of the reason that Maria has taken to fighting crime. Going too far, and spilling too much blood, killing someone, is something she is very aware could become a possibility should she fail to control herself and a small part of her is chillingly okay with that, though she does fight to subdue this dark heart within her gift.
Someone to live for, to prove herself to, to love, could be exactly what she needs.

Her costume is red, black and gold, and she wears a golden claw- much like her own- around her neck as a totem; a magical item granting her moderate protection from most blows, or blades, though she doubts it would stop a gunshot.

Taking some pride in the heritage of her gift, she calls herself 'Tigrina'; a common name from her grandparent's homeland, used to refer to oncillas.
