Description
Happy Birthday Harry
Harry was now twelve years old and for the first time he was looking forward to his birthday; He never use to look forward to his birthday there usually were no presents, no party. But it wasn't all bad Harry desisted he could play with Elly today and soon he would be going back to Hogwarts. Harry has not seen or heard from Dobby again since the night of the diner party. He had mixed feeling about this it, on one hand he was very glad but on the other he was nervous about what was going to happen next. He knew there is nothing he can do about it so he tried not to worry. He and Elly had met at the park everyday and he was so glad to have a friend but despite the many hours playing together Harry realized he didn't know much about his new friend. Today he desisted he would ask some direct questions, but were to start? He didn't want to ask about parents because she might want to talk about his, and he didn't want to. He didn't want to ask about her aunt, uncle and grandmother because then she might want to talk about his aunt, uncle and cousin.
Harry thought and thought about what to talk about all the way to the park then it came to him. "Hi Elly."
Elly looked up from her book and smiled; she put the book down and ran to him for a hug. Elly felt that she was no longer hurting him with hugs which is good. "Good morning Harry, how are you?"
Harry smiled he loved this new routine with Elly, he liked very much the feeling of welcome and joy. Harry was still not completely use to being liked by others and wished that Hermione and Ron could met her right now, Harry often wished they would visit him but for now he would have to wait. Harry reminded himself that his 'family' would never allow 'people like them' into their house and they would never allow him to visit them, because that would make him happy which they try to avoid.
"I'm fine Elly. What's the book your reading?"
"The Giver it's really good I love it, when I'm done you can barrow it." Elly had her huge blue purse on her should and took it off to rummage in it. "Here, gum or a mint?" Elly always carries candy and gum with her.
Harry thought it was old lady-ish to have sweets like mints in her purse but accepted it anyways.
"Thanks. So we start school soon. Excited?"
"Oh yes, I've always wanted to go to Hogwarts my old school Jenkins's School for the Magical was dull and very …" Elly was struggling for a good word.
"Hard?" Harry guessed
"No, not really but it was intimidating I guess you could say. Anyways I didn't like it. My parents use to say that Hogwarts was so much better and that I would go there someday. What's it like?"
"It's great, I love it there I'll have so much to show you. Like the lake with the giant squid or oh and Hagrid you'll like him he a friend and the grounds keeper at Hogwarts. My friends Ron and Hermione you'll like them and they'll like you. The ceiling in the Great Hall were everyone eats is enchanted to show the sky outside. There is so much to do and I can't wait for you to met people."
"I didn't have friends at Jenkins , I hope I'll get along with your friends and they can be my friends too. "
"You'll get on fine, Hermione loves to read and Ron likes well…Quidditch do you play?"
Elly smile turned into a sort of sad tone "No, I like to fly but I don't like sports of any kind." She saw the look on Harry's face "Let me guess, you do?"
"I love Quidditch I play for my house."
"Cool I'll cheer for you but I don't play."
"What if your in a different house? You know about the houses right?"
"Sure but if it means so much to you then I'll support you."
"What if your in a different house make friends with them and we play agenist each other?"
"I can cheer for everyone. 'Do your best!' 'Good job', 'you did so well!' Generic but sincerely meant complaints and cheers. I have Cleansweep how about you?"
"I got a Nimbus 2000."
"Oh wow the latest and greatest! That's very cool, I've been thinking of a new broom but I can't afford that. I have to go shopping for new things and an owl arrived explain to my family how to get to Diagon Ally . Did you already go?"
This was something Harry had not thought of intell he had read the letters from his friends Ron said he and his family would pick Harry up on his birthday and take him out to shop and celebrate his birthday. He had not told the Durselys this because he felt it would cause trouble but he had to till them so it would have to be today. "The Wesley family, Ron's parents are taking me there all magical."
"Cool can met them? Oh no probably not my family is leaving to take me at 10."
"Sorry, the Wesleys are coming by at noon."
"Shoot I'll see them another time then. Oh September the second is my birthday I'll be twelve. When’s your birthday?"
"Today.."
"OH Happy birthday Harry! Why didn't you say so earlier? When's the party?"
"No party I’ve never had a birthday party."
Elly was shocked in silence she had birthday parties when she lived with her parents, her aunt and uncle and grandmother are awful and never celebrate her birthday. She doesn't really care but about them but at least she's had a few. Elly imadity began planning a party for Harry. "Yeah my muggles don't do parties either."
"Ellieana where are you girl?"
Elly and Harry jumped as the voice to call out
"I'm here." Elly called back
Her grandmother came into view black dress, blue jacket, black purse, angry eyes. "We are leaving, come along home." And turned to lead the way back home.
Elly gathered her things and hugged Harry tightly.
"Come on Ellieana no time to chat!"
"Good bye see you later."
"Laters." Harry said he was sad to see his friend leave.
Elly was furious at the shit treatment she was getting and that her play time was at an early end there no way it was 10 o'clock yet. She said nothing but felt so angry. Elly was quiet till they got to London were apparently Diagon Ally is underground "It says there's a tavern that we…What kind of instructions are these?" Her aunt was not happy she gave it her husband who read it and did not seem any happier than she did. "Are they serious? 'A tavern you probably can't see, go in and ask for Tom.' This is nonsense what.."
"What's the name of the tavern?" Elly asked
"The Leaky Cauldron what a name!" Lloyd muttered other things under his breath.
"It's right there I see it." Elly wonder if the sigh with the Cauldron with a leak could not be seen by them or did they not look up.
"There's nothing there Ellieana." Her aunt snapped
"It does say that you can't see it." Elly was trying to be composed "I see it follow me."
"We see an empty building nothing useful is there." Her grandmother's voice was cold and snide
"I'm leaving then." Elly left in the direction of the Leaky Cauldron her relatives were shouting for her to come back, she ignored them.
Elly grabbed the doorknob and threw the door open and knew she was in the right place. Magic was everywhere, a broom was sweeping itself, glass cups were washing themselves and people had wands out. Her muggle family caught up to her and said nothing but she could tell she was in so much trouble.
Lloyd went to the bar and talked to the bald man with no teeth "Were looking for Tom are you him?"
"Ah yes sir you must be the Mu, The Ross family please follow me." The man said with a slight lisp as he had no teeth to annunciate with.
Tom gave them a new map and advice, first stop the bank to get their money exchanged for magic money. Everything went smoothly and quickly and her family had managed to seem polite to the creatures that run the bank. But her grandmother just could not but ruing everything. She asked the teller a Goblin named Geerk, if Ellieana had inherited any money inherited from her parents. Geerk checked the records and yes Elly did have money put aside by her parents. Jenna demanded to know how much was in the family vault and Eleanor wanted the money, however much it was to be transferred imadatly to English pounds and transferred to their bank accont. Geerk snarled at them all and exsplain that there is an armament set up that only Ellieana with her vaulte key at the age of 17 or up can get the gold. Her family thought that was redicuicail and thet felt intitled to the money. Greek did not care what they thought at all, he read the will of Mr. and Mrs Ross and it clearly said in plain English that only their daughter, Ellieana when an adult can assce the bank and only then with her key.
Elly was very curious were her bank key was but did not ask, she was so embraced by her family's rude behavior she did not want to be noticed at the moment.
Her family continued to argue with the bank staff, it was pointless and stupid. Elly would have loved to leave but this time she could not leave her family behind, they had the money. Not for the first time did Elly wish to be a grown adult and/or away from her family. But eventually they did leave to continue shopping. She got new robes, new witch's hat, new cauldron and of course books. At Flourish and Blotts was a huge sign of a smiling man holding a book.
GILDEROY LOCKHART
Coming Soon
For Book signing!
"Who the hell is Gildoroy Lockheart? That's no one I've ever heard of" Lloyd
'That's because his a magic person you idiot.' Elly thought to herself but inseet of saying that shrugged her shoulders.
"Well lets go inside and get this over with." Jenna said and the door opened for her and stayed open for all of them to pass.
It was chaotic inside, so many people trying to get what they want. Lloyd had the list of books "There all Lockheart books! Just for one subject!" This was outrages to him.
Jenna took the list and read of it "This is going to cost a fortune! I wonder if they sell them second-hand."
"That's a brilliant idea love, that's what will do." Llyod pecked his wife o the check.
'Cheep bastards.' Elly was scowling at the turned backs as she walked behind them.
They bought all that they could second-hand but they had to pay full price for the seven Lockhart books. With the books bought they could go home, but Elly didn't want to leave. There was so much she wanted to do and see and try. Elly wanted to get Harry a birthday present but did not want to ask her family for money. They weren't happy with her or happy about speeding money at all and unhappy about not getting her money from the bank. So when she thought about it, she really didn't want to ask for their ride back home was uncomfortable and because of bad traffic long. When they got home Elly tried going straight to her room with the things she could carry but was stopped by her grandmother.
"Hold it right there Ellieana Ross you have to apologize to this family." Eleanor Ross stands above her granddaughter, arms crossed.
"What did I do?" Elly made her ascent more American to annoy Eleanor who is not very fond of Americans. Eleanor still to this day belies that ever girl her youngest son dated or married was to upset her.
"Young lady you know too right that you ran away and disobeyed us."
Elly was silent but stared definitely into Eleanor eyes 'I'm not sorry for that; I won't apologize.'
The sounds of Lloyd and Jenna having their own conversation outside could be heard from the open door and filled the silence and Eleanor and Elly had created.
The tension grew as grandmother and granddaughter were silently sparing with their glares.
'I will not say 'sorry' I won't.' Elly thought and clenched her fist with determination.
As if reading her granddaughter's thoughts "Young lady you will apologize to me and your aunt and uncle."
'Oh no I won't. Or else what you old hag?' Elly thought righteously but did not actually dare leave without her grandmother's permission. Besides turning your back on her is very dangerous, especially is she is upset.
"What's going on Mum?" Lloyd came in to a chilly showdown, his arms full of the things bought for Elly. It really did feel colder in her, 'It must be Elly's doing' he told himself.
"Ah there you are dear, I was telling your niece that she was very rude to us and is going to apologize." Eleanor looked to her son for backup. Only then did she realize that something was different, something was wrong...
"When did she...when was she rude to us Mum?" He was truly confused.
"At that shop she was rude and disobedient." Eleanor’s tone was icy and he temper rising.
"Well I can't blame her to much, we did not believe the shop was there and the directions did say that we cannot see the tavern. But Elly please do not run off like that again, it is very dangerous."
Elly and Eleanor were shocked by the reaction, it was not at all what either of them were expecting.
"Okay uncle Lloyd I won't do that again." Elly was not sure if this promise was a lie but she didn't seem to be in trouble anymore.
"Good girl now stay out of trouble and unpacked your things."
Floyd and Elly put the things in her room and he even helped unpack.
"Thank you." Elly said ad he understood the added meaning. "Stay out of your grandmother's way Ellieana."
"Right, of course." Elly said with a neutral tone.
Lloyd closed the bedroom and realized just how much colder the outside of the room was. Something on the floor glistened and he knelled to pick it up. It was a tiny snowflake and the tiny drops of water had to be metaled snow. Lloyd correctly guessed that Elly had used unintentional magic and had created the snow.
'That girl needs to learn to control her temper.' Lloyd thought as he made his way downstairs and on the landing of the stairs was his mother.
"You are to soft and lenient Lloyd." Elenore scolds her face pinched and severly wrinkled.
Lloyd scowled, he did not appreciate being told how to raise a child; he and Jenna are the caregivers and providers for Elly not her. "You are sometimes too hard mother." He said in a soft and reprimanding tone.
"Do not speak to your mother that way! I'm laying down now and I don't want to be bothered." Eleanor storms off to her room, muttering the whole way.
"She just needs to cool off." Lloyd told himself.
"Lloyd why is it so damn cold in here?" Jenna was rubbing her hands.
"Ellieana and mother had a row and you know how Elly is, and how her magic gets out of hand." Lloyd sounded so very tired.
"Oh. So there avoiding each other is that it?"
Lloyd sighed "Yes, and mum is napping and Elly is sorting her new things. I think they should be left alone." and then as an afterthought "She even made it snow."
"Snow?" Jenna asked as if 'snow' was a new word to her.
"Snow, she was mad and her magic made it snow, it’s all gone now.”
"Well as long as it didn't cause water damage to the floor I don't care." Jenna replied and grabbed the car keys from their hook by the front door.
"Your leaving? To where?" Lloyd had wanted a nice quite lay in with his wife and now she is leaving.
"I'll be back, just having tea with the girls." Jenna smiled to her husband and walked out the door.
What could Lloyd do? Nothing, he had to watch as his wife drive off and have to wait for an unknown length of time. Lloyd went the living room to wach telly. It's not what he really wanted, but well he had nothing better to do.
Elly heard her aunt leave and felt a small amount of joy, now with the old bat sleep and Lloyd down stairs Elly wanted to pretend that she was alone in the house and that she wasn't avoiding her family. But she knew that she was avoiding her family and worst of all Harry was having fun, without her and might not be back till Elly herd a tapping noise, she looked around to see an owl at her window. "Oh." Elly said breathlessly this is the first time she ever saw an owl. It was dark gray and dappled and it had a letter tied to its leg. She allowed it inside and it felw with great grace and laded getly on her bed. It stuck its leg out and allowed Elly to take the letter. According to the address it was from the ministry of magic. She put the letter to the side, she would read it later.
"Thank you, if you stay I can get you water." Elly told the owl and it hooted quietly. Elly put the letter to the side and went the get the water. As she walked down the stairs she could hear the T.V. and her uncle chuckling. She kept walking till she got to the kitchen. The kitchen Elly hated, its very industrial looking and not at all what she thinks a kitchen should be. The counters are white, the floor gray tile, the appliances gray or staleness steel the cuberds white. Elly got a bowl from their cubbered and poured warm water from the tap and filled the bowl half way. Elly set the bowl side, shut the tap off and carried the bowl back up to her room. But before she could Lloyd was entering the kitchen.
"What's the bowl for Elly?" He asked very puzzled by his young niece.
"An owl came to my room, hes thirsty." Elly explained and continued on her way.
Ordinarily Lloyd would not have believed or at least doubted this explanation but because it was Elly, a girl who always told the truth and who is strange and strange things happen to, he did believe. Lloyd followed behind, he wanted to see this owl, he had seen an owl before.
In Elly's room and still on the bed the owl was waiting and gave a hoot. Elly placed the bowl on the bed, the owl lapped at the water. Both Elly and Lloyd were transfixed by the creature, they ordinarily would never see. After a moment the owl spreed his wings and flew out the empty window.
" I wonder why he was here." Lloyd thought aloud.
"I think my magic drew him in." Elly said this eying the letter the owl delivered and had a feeling she knew what the letter would say.
"To bad he left Jenna might have wanted to met him." Lloyd said and left to continue watching telly.
Elly could not see Jenna liking the owl at all, she would not think it pretty and would not like the idea of it being in her house. Elly went back to the letter and opened it. It was exceatly what she thought it would be, a letter from the Ministry of Magic.
Dear Miss Ross
We are aware that a Freezing Charm was performed at your resident...
Elly did not read the rest of the main letter went to the rest of the signature, and was not happy with what was there.
Enjoy your holidays!
Yours Sincerely,
Mafalda Hopkirk
IMPROPER USE OF MAGIC OFFICE
Ministry of Magic
"Oh go to hell 'Enjoy your holidays' stupid woman like she’s not threatening me with expulsion." Elly was angry but was trying not to get too angry, if she got very angry then she might accidentally do more magic. But when she thought about it did not seem fair, they seemed to know that she was home, and don't they know it was just her family, its not like she was doing magic in front of strangers. how rare could accidental magic be? The more Elly thought about it the angrier she got and she did not realize that her magic was acting on its own, till she calmed down and her things drooped to the floor. When she relaxed so do the levitating charm she had unknowing put on her cauldron, a book and even her own wand. Her wand made no sound when it hit the floor but the cualdern landed on the book and smashed it wide open.
"Oh no! No, please, oh damn it!" Elly held her copy of Matilda and felt joy and horror as her book mended itself. "Oh no, I'm in so much trouble; a levitating charm and a repairing charm after being warned..."
Another owl came in the open window, actually it was the same one as before, flew to the bed and it offered its leg.
"Hang on please wait for me to write a letter back before leaving." Elly plead with the ow.
It knoted its handsome hand and allowed itself to be carriyed out of the room. Elly picked it up and carried it like a baby, grabbed the first letter and went down to see her uncle.
"Uncle Lloyd the owl is back and I think I'm in trouble."
"What happened? Is he hurt?" Lloyd came over quickly.
"No, hes fine but I'm not." She gave him the letter and untied the second letter from the owl's leg and gave it to Lloyd.
"What's this?" He asked rather than read it but than began to read it.
"Dear Miss Ross
We are aware that a Freezing Charm was performed at your resident this moring at eleven minutes past eleven. As you know, underage witches are not permitted to perform spells outside school, and further spellwork on your part may lead to your expulsion from said school (Decree for the Reasonable Restriction of Underage Sorcery, 187, Paragragh C).
We would also ask that you remember that any magical activityes that rises notice by members of the non-magical community (Muggles) is a serious offense...
Lloyd put that letter down and opened the other one, this one read:
Dear Miss. Ross
Despite being previously warned you have continued to: perform magic in a Muggle resident and perform underage, unsuperviered magic. Serious attctions are being considered and your wand might be snapped and you may be baned from all magic education insations..
Lloyd could see these people were not be taken lightly, they were extremely sensitive to their rules being broken and they were not to be trifled with. He had to act fast. He was going to write back.
"Elly, I'll do what I can for you, owl please stay here." Lloyd was only somewhat surprised to see the owl knod his head in understanding. He went to get letter writing things immediately and try to explain things way.
Elly took the owl to the living room to sit on the couch and was petting it gently. Elly had no idea how Lloyd was going to help or if he could help, but she did appracte that he was trying.
