"Workers in china do work their sweat off everyday to earn that li'l bit they could to support themselves and their families. Each drop of sweat to them is gold and gold to them is rice to their bowl for dinner everyday. Smoking a pipe like this is something one would reward himself with.. like a commission after a good sale."

They don't really have tobacco in china...especially not for the lower class. He's getting high. Very high. On some opiate of one form or another..but I can assure you, it's not tabacco. China's vegatation is too water-draining to allow for something such as tobacco, which requires a long grow time, to grow.

canton, that's where my father used to live; i showed him this picture, and he said it reminded him all too clearly of his life back then. anyhow, i think it's a great picture, and it just brings one thing up in my mind: "simple pleasures"....i love it.

This is an awesome photo. You really captured a feeling of humanity in this. It seems so objective but it says so much at the same time. I really don't think there's a lot you can do to change this picture.

on a side note...
life indeed in china is pretty harsh for some of them. no i'll not go into sweat-shops and how lowly they are paid to manufacture stuff which will be exported to america and rest of the world making a 1000%+ (yes, 1000%) profit.
the most important thing for a majority of the ppl in mainland china is (financial) security. Thus it arises numerous cases where (very, very) beautiful chinese women are with guys who are ugly, fat, etc... (add other properties which are the exact total opposite of what you would expect penelope cruz or cindy crawford).
Isit wrong? i dont think so... especially not from their point of view in life.
just something for y'all to ponder about.
btw, i'm chinese but not from the people's republic (git?!)
