Description
This is my last painting for the Urban Disposition project at college, within the theme Segregation.
This time I am talking about the protests in Iran.
The protests started after the death of Mahsa Amini on 16th September of this year and it is still happening. It's been more than 40 days of protests with more than 200 people killed, including students. Women are cutting their hair and burning their hijab in the streets, and getting killed for that.
So, in solidarity with all these brave people that are fighting for freedom and against oppression, I decided to paint "The Lioness".
The title is related to the Lion of the old Iranian flag. In its right paw (or hand) it holds a sword, with a sun behind it. The Lion figure remained an integral part of the Iranian flag until 1979 but was removed after the Islamic Revolution. After seeing protesters using this flag, I started to sketch the idea.
I know (thanks to the videos of ozi_ozar on IG ) that this flag has a very, veeeeery long history and it's very complicated because of the multicultural background of Iran, but I wanted to use it instead of the actual flag of the Islamic Republic. I hope I didn't offend anyone with it, that wasn't my intention.
As I said before in my IG account, art is the only way I can show my respect for those people, so may God protect you all and give you strength and power to keep fighting. 🙏
