Just Adobe Photoshop CS5 or CS6, and a tablet like Wacom Intuous or a Surface Pro tablet. You can do most of it via pencil and pen too. Do you know how to draw?

Tons of tutorials out there, but it would be a big time investment. Pays off if you like total control over your fantasies though.

It's great, only keep in mind that horses don't have cloven [like this (\/)] hooves. Their hooves are completely solid all the way around. Perfect otherwise
