Ofcourse it's very good.. but as a friend I'd say it's a bit too dim. Maybe it's intentional but i just wish to see a bit more detail.

yes, im really looking back on this and wondering how it all went down the drain so bad.. i tried to fix poor colors and it just got more and more worked into a corner. I will try to upload a better version though, but im rushing to get my new painting done first.. Maybe I'll redo it sometime too because I liked the concept.

This is so wonderfully dark and beautiful. That new camera better be good to improve on this! ^^

I'm a "medieval connaisseur" , yes: it's an extraordinary period! Is there any connection between your "Devotion VI" and the well known - and so called- obscene Marcabru's poems? I'm afraid the translation you give isn't truly faithful.
I just compared your painting to Soulages' ones, because of the darkness! You know that Soulages is said "the painter of the BLACK" Is your work so dark, only because of a bad photo? A pity! This obscure atmosphere is really attractive! (NB: my pictures are as bad as yours!)

Yes, it is rather dark, but perhaps not as dark as seen here, more even, more visible details, like the ribcage in the most shadowed area of the figures. I will be buying a camera soon.
I didn't know Solage painted, I've been listening to a lot of Medieval music as I paint, really just learning about them, and I was really excited when I came accross Marcabru, because I felt Marcabru's poems are constantly the same theme as my art, so I felt it would be nice to combine the two... "Devotion" is a personal theme - a series of drawings and paintings I have worked out on my own. I have even been considering possibly doing a painting about Marcabru.. but that will have to wait, I have about a dozen other ideas in line ready for painting.
I assume you speak French, would you mind translating it in your own words? I could only find one website with translations of his poems, and the author doesn't even seem to understand him and what his poems mean, (judging from when they inserted their own opinion on one of the pages.) And google translate was just a mess. I cut out parts of the poem, of course.

1) I myself play "medieval" music with my baroc recorders ensemble. Do you listen to "Jethro Tull" music when painting?
2) My knowledge of the medieval french litterature isn't very good: the "langue d'Oc" is really difficult to understand. I'm unable to read Marcabru "in the text".
Who has made the translation you quote here? You know, the best you can do is going on "RonAkehurst on deviant art": he's not a painter, just a good phtographer ( I made the portrait of his grand son: " David the Golden Boy" in my gallery ) He's one of the world famous "connaisseur" and translator of the the medieval french languages. He has been teaching them in the Minnesota University for a long time, but is now retired. He'll give you some advices better than mines. He's not American but English.
I can give you his address. You are right: Google translation is a joke!
3) Your squeleton sitting on the side of the road seems right coming from the I. Bergman movie...
4) Soulages is really famous - in Europ at least- for his "Black"paintings, and light effects. Too abstract for me... You'll find him on Google, sure!
5) Ouf! I'm tired!

I don't listen to Jethro Tull, but of course I've heard of them.. the stuff I have been listening to is pretty true old fashioned style, with no modern embelishments (like guitars)
Ohh so you mean someone else, I though you meant Solage/Soulage. You see, So(u)lage was a Medieval musician too! I have a couple So(u)lage songs on my computer as well. So I thought you were referring to Marcabru that way. How fitting and strange coincidence, and that you knew Marcabru anyways..
Oh yes, it's old french, isn't it.. I should have been thinking. Old English is a mess too.. I once did some translations for another painting I was working on.
Yes, I don't really like these Soulages paintings either, it's kind of a joke.

I had never heard ( correct?) of "Solage"as a medieval musician But my culture isn't exhaustive... An English one? French?
I know some of the old poets because I'm a passionate lover of the french language, but not as deeply as my friend Ron Akehurst.

I do not know, I really just found a timeline list of Medieval musicians and started downloading music.. I only know the most about Marcabru.

It looks wonderful even with the less-than-optimal photograph. In a way it works better, because the murky tones look so well-blended.

Thanks, I tried a lot of photoshop work.. Cameras are really expensive so I'm a bit apprehensive about going out and getting a new one just for paintings, but my camera is worth about $50-100 nowadays. I'll research them slowly and hopefully have one before too many paintings go by.

I'm thinking of getting a camera for the same purpose too, and yeah, you can spend basically as much as you feel like. There's barely any upper limit at all to the cost of the damn things.

haha, my camera.. just broke - it will no longer focus. I think this is a sign.. screw it, I'll probably see if I can find a good one for around 400, I'm thinking. Probably used..

That's probably a good idea. My art teacher recommended I try Kijiji or eBay to get it used.
