This is dedicated to all the victims of the Fukushima disaster in Japan. God bless them.
I took the photo in a park close to my home (Brussels, Belgium). I also made the quick miniature sketch based on the Fukushima nuclear plant site.

More facts:

The "Fukushima nuclear accidents" are a series of ongoing equipment failures and releases of radioactive materials at the Fukushima I Nuclear Power Plant, following the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami on 11 March 2011. The plant comprises six separate boiling water reactors maintained by the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO). Reactors 4, 5 and 6 had been shut down prior to the earthquake for planned maintenance. The remaining reactors were shut down automatically after the earthquake, but the subsequent 14 metres tsunami flooded the plant, knocking out emergency generators needed to run pumps which cool and control the reactors. The flooding and earthquake damage prevented assistance being brought from elsewhere.

Evidence arose of partial core meltdown in reactors 1, 2, and 3; hydrogen explosions destroyed the upper cladding of the buildings housing reactors 1, 3, and 4; an explosion damaged the containment inside reactor 2; and multiple fires broke out at reactor 4. In addition, spent fuel rods stored in spent fuel pools of units 1–4 began to overheat as water levels in the pools dropped. Fears of radiation leaks led to a 20 kilometres (12 mi) radius evacuation around the plant. Workers at the plant suffered radiation exposure and were temporarily evacuated at various times. On 18 March, Japanese officials designated the magnitude of the danger at reactors 1, 2 and 3 at level 5 on the 7 point International Nuclear Event Scale (INES). Power was restored to parts of the plant from 20 March, but machinery damaged by floods, fires and explosions remained inoperable.

On 25 March, Japan's nuclear regulator announced a likely breach and radiation leak in the containment vessel of the unit 3 reactor, the only one at the plant using MOX fuel. World wide measurements of radioactive fallout released from the reactors were reported by New Scientist to be "nearing Chernobyl levels". It reported that the preparatory commission of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty Organization had measured levels of iodine-131 at 73% and caesium-137 at 60% the levels released from the Chernobyl disaster. Food grown in the area was banned. Tokyo officials declared its tap water unsafe for infants for a short time. Plutonium has been detected in the soil around the plant in five locations. The soil samples were taken on 22 March 2011.

The IAEA announced on 27 March that workers hospitalized as a precaution on 25 March had been exposed to between 2 and 6 Sv of radiation at their ankles when standing in water in unit 3. The international reaction to the accidents was also concerned. The Japanese government and TEPCO have been criticized for poor communication with the public. On 20 March, the Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano announced that the plant would be closed once the crisis was over. Read more

Fun fact Fukushima actually survived both the direct hit of the earthquake and tsunami before the reactor finally was on it's last legs and even then the radiation was not bad compared to other reactors. Plus Fukushima was originally supposed to be shut down a year later but thanks to the earthquake it prematurely shut down the ancient 1960's reactor unlike modern day reactors which where meant to take far more damage the Fukushima reactor in a weird turn actually survived farther then most reactor models that were already decommissioned from the 60's. As a Engineer in training i'd say the Fukushima reactor is an engineering marvel since it survived more damage then it was designed to take originally. Now can you imagine clean Thorium reactors replacing these old Plutonium reactors in a decade.

Too bad Fukushima has contaminated 1/3 of the oceans. Nuclear energy is perhaps the most irresponsible creation of mankind.

This is fascinating. I love your style of rendering the subject. In the Fukushima piece, perhaps a better choice of background would add more emphasis - maybe set it against a photo of the coastline at Fukushima, etc. Great work!

wow, this is a very touching and beautiful piece. the shot is wonderful while the sketch is beautifully done and terribly heart wrenching. it just makes me want to hop on a plane and head to japan even more than watching the news coverage does. wonderful job.

This piece is beautifully thought out and well taken. The blurred sense of movement created merely in the background by those suggested colours really directs my eye towards the sketch you've done. Which, I must say is drawn with such precise skill, especially your crisp lines. You involve and direct the viewer's imagination which I think is incredible. Overall a very intuitive and impressive series of work. Aweseome

You do know that he pictured the fukushima power plant? The same plant in Japan that may have a nuclear meltdown, which is also leaking radiation...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Americarules1776 In reply to shadowmanwkp [2016-06-19 23:58:17 +0000 UTC]

Actually the radiation ain't that bad compared to the accident at Chernobyl and i'm impressed that ancient reactor was still working it was forty years old when it went. I'm damn impressed with how strong it was it took two direct hits from the most largest of disasters to bring it down now thats incredible engineering for something made in the sixties.

BellicoseBreakfast [2011-03-30 16:46:57 +0000 UTC]

Seems kinda tasteless.
Not only will the problem not develop into a nuclear explosion, regardless of how bad it gets, the image of one conjures up unfortunate associations of WW2.
Whether you want to draw something to support Japan or not is not what I'm criticizing, but the content of the image itself. This seems to have a much higher potential for offence than other images, particularly from the people it purports to be dedicated to.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

adoomer In reply to BellicoseBreakfast [2011-04-07 22:22:08 +0000 UTC]

I strongly support this statement - drawing a nuclear explosion in the context of Fukushima power plant breakdown is totally misleading. I can understand the symbolical meaning of a nuclear blast (and the association/simplification: nuclear energy+disaster=nuclear explosion), although I find it inappropriate to connect these things in this terrible topic.

I like your technique, but I definitely disagree with your approach to this particular subject.
