Description Two months.
My black mouse.
Illustrator 10
+ Photoshop 7
-----------------------
Small, Personal Masterpiece?

Maybe.

I just finished this tonight.
It isn't perfect, but it's the first digital painting I've ever really done.
I'm so impossibly nervous posting this.

There were no references used other than the novel David Copperfield, upon which this is based.
I hate Steerforth's death scene, I really do, which makes drawing it all the more fun.

(You might also check out my scraps to see a rough but stormier version...I still hiss at the sunlight.)

Haha. Well...it wasn't exactly two consecutive months...I left it hanging for like four weeks because it wasn't going anywhere. So I guess I should say within a two month period. Eh. Unimportant technicalities. Thanks tho'!

I have no idea why they didn't like it. That must've taken a heck of a lot of effort. My only critique would be to try and use more contrasting colors for things like the rocks in the background and stuff. The way you've got it now makes it look a little plasticky. That's one heck of a feat, though. Congratos on finally getting it done.

well, for some reason, i am not able to enlarge this. but anyway... wow. the sky is so beautifully blended, and the way the light plays off the choppy waves of the ocean, and the smooth streaks of sand... the expressions of the characters are very well done, i can really feel the emotion in this piece. now if only it would let me zoom in! ah well. good good job, you've definately inspired me to work on my photoshop skills.

This is just great - there's clearly a lot of attention to detail, and the colours blend into each other beautifully.

Good job

Out of morbid curiousity (no pun intended), what sort of brush settings did you use to paint it?

Two words: smudge brush.
Ranging from 1-4 pixels at any given time.
And towards the end I cheated and used the burn and dodge tool---talk about a life saver.

I have a feeling I could have done this a lot faster and better with a tablet and a stylus, but you know.

well, I love it. especially the ocean, since I can never seem to get them right. the colors are beautiful. I also really like the cloudiness in the sky, and the lightning, and the whole style of the picture. pretty much amazing for your first digital painting. :] or any digital painting, for that matter.

lovely. <3

The ocean was probably one of the hardest parts and for that reason I try my best to avoid painting oceans cause I can never get them right either. Being landlocked, I've only really seen the ocean in real life once so I just had to fake it, look at pictures and hope for the best!

But thank you for all the kind words! I feel loved! Weee!
