Description Voima Building
(Voiman talo/Metodistikirkon talo)
Lapintie 4

Frans Jousi, 1924
Style: Classicism

The co-operative Voima was founded in 1917 as a conglomeration of the co-ops of Finlayson, Tampella, and several other smaller co-ops. In 1924 they built a commercial building across from Tampella, which was designed by Frans Jousi. The building originally also held the Voima restaurant and a ballroom. Drawn in a fairly straightforward classicist style, the façade is enlivened by its protruding staircase, which forms a vaguely tower-like section on the building's side. In 1962 the building was purchased by Finland's Methodist Church, who turned the ballroom into a church hall. It acted as a church until 1968 when a new church building was completed on the plot's southeast corner, designed by Kalevi Lankinen. That same year, units of the Tampere University moved into the old building and later on functionary units of the state.
