For all of our bravado and masculinity, most men will basically do anything women tell them to do either in an attempt to please them, or out of fear of displeasing them. Historically it may be true that men were more dominant, but in these days when the term "toxic masculinity" is thrown about at the slightest sign of a man being manly I think that has changed. This has been the trend since the 60's and 70's until now I would say that men are having a harder time being dominant than ever before. That trait has been bred out of males, and now playing the part of a Dom is an act.
Just my opinion. No facts to back it up.

I can understand the misgivings, being a domme is not easy at all. It requires an ability to display assertiveness and self-confidence, and to understand the feelings and the needs of the submissive. I have tried - unsuccessfully - to be a domme (as required by my then-mistress) because although I can play the part very well, I'm unfortunately unable to understand other people's feelings. Well, actually I cannot even understand my own. I can be abusive, cruel and petty and those aren't domme traits at all.
The only times I have ever displayed any sort of good dominant-type behaviour is when I'm behind a camera. There is some sort of dominant-submissive relationship between a photographer and a model. If the relationship is good enough, it shows in the pictures.
