I freehand the sketch but in this case I had the reference picture right next to it, both approximately the same size, to make sure I was getting the proportions correct I also had a few reference lines that I drew, (eg. a triangle from the top of his horns down to his shoulder, and then down to the hand) to get the right angles and everything. I'm not used to doing full body shots (most of my paintings are just faces or upper body) so it took awhile to get the sketch right lol Sometimes for colour close ups I'll use a grid when doing the sketch, although I generally try not to because I like to practise freehand accuracy. For black and white I never use any reference lines because I don't use sketches, I just paint the highlights and shadows in large chunks until it looks right - I'm hoping to get to that point with colour eventually too

I actually only used one brush - a soft round brush (at varying sizes), no blurring tools or anything. I just blended it by painting intermediate colours etc, cause the brush opacity wasn't always 100% (it varies with pen pressure on my tablet)
It just ended up with the effect that it has because I painted it so large, if you look at the 'downloaded' size on the main picture you can more clearly see all my brush strokes and everything
