Did you make it in the image of another or did you draw it completely from scratch?

It was just a doodle from imagination

Yup, you're owning the interplay of colour and tone here. My hat comes off to you!

What medium (if any) were you using with the paints? And what are you painting on?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bethaleil In reply to grind-the-rust [2017-06-24 15:54:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
If by medium you mean additives like oils or stuff like that, none whatsoever. I am still brand new to oil paint so I used the colors straight out of the tube (with some mixing, of course) in an attempt at alla prima. It's on regular board, by the way.Β
the painting is only like... 4 square inches; I used the same piece of board for a couple different practice doodles.

If you know anything about oil paint, could you give me some tips? Like... what does one thin it with? I kinda figured water wouldn't work and I heard something about using turpentine and/or various seed oils.Β

Heya. I've always been too scared of oils - for no good reason at all, apart from that "this shit is for serious artists, and *insert lame self-deprecation here*". I do know a bit about it though:

Oil and water will do interesting things, but it will not thin your paints. Mineral turpentine will thin them to a beautiful, watery consistency that will run and soak into your canvas/board and be very translucent - like watercolour. Oils (linseed and lavender are the most common) and "thinning mediums" will also thin your paint, give it translucency and spreadability, but you get more of a viscous, oily or gel-like consistency - it won't be as runny, and it will retain brush marks a lot better and have a bit more body than paint diluted with turps. So that's the sum total of my knowledge.

Oh, also prime your canvases and boards, otherwise the paint won't grip as well, and can also damage the canvas/board over the years. A guy I used to work for primed all his canvases with rabbit glue (to stiffen them and make them watertight) and gesso (for grip) - he was an oldschool motherfucker. There are clear primers available out there as well, if you want to see your canvas as a base colour - dunno if they're any good.

Yeah, that's all I know.

This is actually some pretty solid information, thanks. I think I'll go with the oils then, one of the main reasons I wanted to take up oil painting was because of the thickness. That and the 'oils automatically make me a serious artist' mentality that I still somehow have after getting my ass beat by them.

Sorry to jump into the conversation, but I know from personal experience that turpentine is the main (and cheapest) medium to thin oils when starting.
You can also use Safflower, Walnut, Poppyseed oil etc but that's for more complicated cases, which you won't necessarily need yet; turpentine will do the job just fine. You can find it easily at your local art store and if you're lucky you might as well find odorless turpentine for about 10$

Thanks! I guess I'll be getting some turpentine then.
