Description I did this for an art prompt on another group.  I used mechanical pencils and Blick studio pencils, a white gel pen and a kneaded eraser.

Thanks for commenting, but I'm not sure what  you mean by a tie bit.   Could you explain, since I do appreciate helpful hints.

OH LOL I meant a Tid bit. Like more darker grey tones. Sorry for the spelling error.

oh ok. Thanks for explaining. I've been working on that by mixing in some  charcoal pencils,  since it isn't possible to get  a true black with graphite. I think things are improving a bit.  Thanks again for commenting

Yes I have tried using charcoal since then and I'm getting the hang of it.  Always working to improve!

This drawing is off to a good start!  His neck is oddly tapered though and looks like it would be really thin at the base.  Also, I would recommend not smudging everything.  You're losing a lot of rich values by doing so!  It's more difficult, but when you shade with various pressures, your work will look so much more vibrant even when it's just with a homely graphite pencil.  Also, you can do with darker values and I recommend a 6B pencil or greater and the hair is a bit flat and would appreciate having a few light-gray areas to make it look more voluminous.  This is a good start but you can take it further!

Thanks for taking the time to comment.  I appreciate the tips on shading and will give it a try when I get the chance to draw again.  I can never seem to get the blacks I want with a graphite pencil (I used an 8B in some areas of this one) and have thought about mixing with charcoal for darker hues.  As far as the neck proportions I can only say that I looked again at the reference photo and the proportions look right to me.  He was still pretty adolescent lanky at the time the photo was taken.  I have been looking for really good graphite artists to discuss technique with and have made improvements over the years because of that, so I hope to keep improving!
Thanks again!

The skin and shading are done very well, but I have to say his nose doesn't look very symmetrical.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.  Will have to try again on the nose in another sketch since the original of this is already gone.
