Description Just recently came back from Japan and Thailand. While we were in Kyoto, we managed to get to see the geishas - which is a real treat, cuz they only come out in the public once a year. We were uber lucky.

Here, the geishas from a couple of different schools perform a dance to farewell Winter and welcome in Spring. Then they throw these beans out to the crowd. Each bean is meant to deduct a year from your life, or something like that...so the little old ladies were scarily aggressive

Beautiful picture, the lighting and framing is really gorgeous. She is actually a maiko, an apprentice geisha. Her name is Fukue, and she is from the Miyagawacho district. Maiko and geisha actually perform in a variety of different events throughout the year, they certainly do more than one public performance a year. This event in particular, Setsubun, is one of the first events of the year in which they'll perform and marks the New Year in the Solar-Lunar Calendar.

I've never heard of the custom of Setsubun beans deducting a year from someone's life, although I've heard a person should eat one for each year of their life, and occasionally plus one so that they'll have good fortune during the year (I think the latter practice is more of a regional variation). The beans are also used in Mamemaki. The beans will be thrown outside of the front door of a house or at someone (usually a dad) dressed up as a demon while they say "Oni wa soto, Fuku wa uchi" or "Demons out, fortune in". It's a very fun time of year to be in Japan .
