I have a tip on how to lighten it... you could download free image editing software such as The Gimp or Paint.net. they are both fairly easy to use and will allow you to add effects to images as well. just a though

simple. With the picture open, go to the adjustments menu and adjust the levels as well as playing with the brightness and contrast. keep playing with it until you like the result.
