I know this is pretty far outside of my usual subject matter, but I did this commission for for a story of his and was very happy with how it came out, so I figured I'd post it anyway. It's an updated version of a drawing I did for him almost two years ago now.Here's a link to the old one:

Itβs interesting to see how an artistβs work evolves over time. Years of practice and experimentation can completely revolutionize oneβs style, or simply refine what was there before. I feel as though this work, in comparison to its predecessor, shows how far your work can go.
The lighting of the original gives it a plastic-like quality; Lillyβs belly and the cauldron are very smoothly shaded, and the cel-like shading on the pipes give them a geometric appearance. The lighting for clothing is also very smooth. Itβs a style I can only compare to that of a doll house: simple and smooth, quaint even, with an innocent charm.
This new piece is much rougher with its lighting. Lillyβs skin is shaded with brush strokes that give a grainy look from afar, as well as giving an illusion of tension; there seems to be a moody grayness, even on the character most illuminated in the scene. I mentally compared it to the sketchbook style of the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory game, with the grayness and coarse lines of Lillyβs body. Everyone and everything else stays cloaked in shadow and fog, except for the dim glow of the stage and machinery. While it is a bit hard to see the details of the characters, the darkness really sets a nice foreboding tone.
Your posing has greatly improved. Everyone is more articulated than before: Rai playing guitar while balancing on Lillyβs back: the merry band in performance: Hanako freaking out in surprise and fear: Hisao, rocking out as the jolly fellow he is. The curvy anatomy and proportions of Emi is interesting, cartoonish, and set the stage for the future chapters. The expressions are all priceless.
Background is nice. Not extravagant, but beautiful in its relative simplicity; few pipes to indicate direction of lighting, dimly-lit machinery that can provide background details while not being distracting, and the rest is simply BLACK.
And my favorite character is still at her schtick, now with more dramatic lighting. I love it.

Damn, I'm glad you provided the older version, it's seriously awesome to see the difference here! I can't name a single thing that hasn't improved, so I'll just say that the lighting, texture, and background elements have probably seen the greatest glow-up. Keep up the good work, dude!
