Description        "Who are you?" Hanana asked. She tried to stop trembling, but she couldn't control herself.
"I'm Giruru," he said. "And sorry if Dokuku scared you. He has that effect."
The pale man shrugged and looked bashful. Hanana looked at one and then the other until she felt dizzy.
"Anyway, I summoned you here to find some things out." He squinted at her. "Who exactly are you and what are you doing getting involved in the corps?"
"I'm Hanana," she answered, trying to sound and look confident. "And what do you mean, 'corps'?"
"The assassin corps," Giruru said, rolling his eye. "I didn't think you'd be this dense."
Hanana narrowed her eyes. "Pardon me then. I just recently found out about you. I'm living with Mekeke and Putata and I'm not going to bother whatever plans you have. I just want to help in any way I can."
"You can be the biggest help by just leaving it alone," Giruru said. "I saw you with them that day you decided to live with them.  I'm certain that you'll cause nothing but trouble, so it would be best if you backed out now." So he was the person in the carriage who'd splashed them.
"Back out?" Hanana shook her head. "And how would anything change if I did that? I said that I want to help now that I'm involved and nobody else has a problem with it."
"Do they now? I don't think you understand any of this. This is a line of work that most would consider dangerous. A naïve little girl like you doesn't belong here."
"From what I've heard, you've done nothing," Hanana said defiantly. She surprised herself with how strong she was being now. Maybe she could handle it. "And I don't know you, so unfortunately, you can't convince me."
Giruru laughed. "I can tell it's a struggle to act like this. Like I said, you're a naïve little girl. You couldn't act tough if your life depended on it."
Hanana's cheeks burned. "And you're a thug according to my friends, so my business is done with you." She started for the door, but Dokuku floated into her path. "I'm sorry," she said. "But I need to go home." Dokuku looked down and glided away.
Nobody tried to stop her on her way out. She didn't get angry often, but now she was burning with indignation. Her heart was pounding. Why did they insist that she just forget everything? For assassins, they weren't very threatening people (well, besides Giruru). They couldn't possibly be as dangerous as they kept saying they were.
She had to calm down. She hadn't looked at Samama's plants for a while. It wouldn't hurt to check on them. With that decided, she started off for Samama's garden.
Hanana scrambled over the wall. Her feet hit the packed snow with a soft thump. It was just like it was before, only now there would be no way to get into the greenhouse. She pressed her palms against the glass and peered in. The plants looked like they were alright without her. She sighed, relieved.
"How did you get here?"
Hanana jumped a foot in the air. "I wasn't disturbing anything! I was just checking on your plants," she said quickly.
Samama was pinning her hair up. She had been woken up late too. She took the pins out of her mouth and let a few locks of red hair tumble down to her shoulder. "I don't think I mentioned my greenhouse last night."
Hanana shuffled awkwardly and blushed. "I, uh…" she said. "I used to sleep here. You see, I didn't have any other place to go and I like plants, so…"
"You were the one who kept my plants up all this time?" Samama's eyebrows were raised. "I wondered who it could possibly be. I should pay you for all that, I suppose."
"Ah! You don't have to! I think you paid for it by letting me stay here all that time."
"Come in," Samama said, waving a hand.
Hanana scraped the snow off her boots at the door and unlaced them. She wasn't sure if it was rude or not, but her stockings were soaked through.
"You should get some new boots."
"I can't afford-''
"Just ask Putata and Mekeke. I'm sure those two would do it for you in a heartbeat."
Hanana smiled warmly at the thought. It was nice to have friends. She pushed an armchair closer to the fire and snuggled into it. She liked warmth too. Feeling warm and comfortable, she could forget about everything that had happened that morning.
Samama sat down and finished putting her hair up. "I wanted to let you know that a message reached me recently," she said. "And it concerns you. But only if you're serious about working with them."
Hanana sat up. "What is it?"
Samama sighed. "They send me messages even when I'm really one of them," she muttered. "And I guess I have no choice but to pass it on."
"What does the message say?" Hanana was bursting with excitement and apprehension. She'd never really been involved in something before. But what they wanted her do could be something she wasn't ready for.
Samama sat up straight in her chair. "How do you feel about parties?"
"I've never been to one."
"Would you like to go to one?"
Hanana shifted uncomfortably. "Well…I don't have anything to wear and I can't dance. I would like to, but I don't think it'd be possible for me to go to one."
Samama smirked. "It's possible," she said. "Because Shurara assigned you, me, Putata and Mekeke to attend a ball."
"That-is that really true?" Hanana gasped. This had to be a dream. But she still couldn't dance.
Her expression must have betrayed her thoughts, because Samama said, "No need to worry. Yukiki can teach you. There's really nothing to it."
Yukiki! "I don't think Yukiki likes me," Hanana said nervously.
Samama laughed. "He doesn't like anyone. He's nicer to you though."
Hanana shrugged. She wasn't so sure of that.
"Why do we have to go to the ball in the first place?" she asked.
"We're apparently stealing something," Samama answered. "We have to contribute to the distraction while someone takes whatever it is. I'm not sure of the plan exactly. I'm not really a part of the corps."
"I'm not either," Hanana said. "I'm more of a bystander who ended up getting swept away." She laughed. Samama smiled back.
