Man, I love dA, you never know what you'll find next.
These, for example, are what I had in my head when I imagined what a "bolt gun" might look like---but you know what's really funny?

Heads up: the reason no one builds bullpup revolvers is because they would blow your hand off. Hot plasma shoots out of the front of the cylinder.

A bullpup revolver could work if the cylinder was enclosed in a shroud that redirected the gases in some other direction. Maybe even funnel them along a tube to the front of the barrel and then vent them upwards as an additional muzzle brake.
Ideally you'd want fully swappable cylinders, so you could quickly pull one out the back and slam in a new one, similar to a magazine change on a semi auto, rather than having to fill each chamber on the cylinder while it remained attached to the gun in the traditional manner.
Bullpup revolvers could make reasonably compact rifle caliber pistols practical. (Rifle caliber pistols already exist, but are mostly single shot affairs, or larger weapons with a seperate box mag in front of the pistol grip that are really just cut-down assault rifles.)

From the looks of it, he's thought of that and put a tight seal around the cylinder. And there isn't much stopping someone from putting a sort of blast sleeve around where the cylinder goes to avoid that. But, as you've noted, the pressure might tear apart the sleeve regardless. So...

It could be built like the Nagant revolver so it seals up as the hammer is cocked.

The 7.62×38 was weak enough and the barrel was long enough that it didn't cause enough pressure while the bullet was travelling through to destroy the internals. I doubt it would work with anything more powerful than a 38.

A fantastic and original concept. I've seen many bullpup configurations for sidearms but I have never seen a bullpup revolver.

Isn't weird that no-ones built BullPup revolvers yet? The BullPup-ness Balances the Volver out while increasing Barrel Length and therefore accuracy/stability.

Revolvers might be the only side-arms where bull-pup construction would make any sense. BTW, how do you intend to fire the rounds? Can't have a bulky hammer, so are you using some sort of electrical firing pin?

bflynn22 In reply to Tounushi [2010-09-04 20:29:06 +0000 UTC]
first off, i love you...
you gave me a wonderful idea!
originally: the hammer was pushed to where you would normally find a decocking level. and the butt of the gun had a small, but very strong pin that mechanically would tap the round upon the squeeze of the trigger...
but now im think, METAL STORM!!!!!
no shells, just bullets. small charge to send off the proprietary rounds! with a chamber that long, you could stick in 2-3 small rounds(ready for burst fire).
or 2 rounds but bigger.
or 1 massive round.
then you revolve the chamber, and more bullets!!! yay
awwww my god. tounushi ROCKS
Search METAL STORM to understand!!!!

I know the system. But I wasn't thinking of it, when I commented.
But the more I hear, the more I like.
And will the cylinders be detachable, like during the early, cap-and-ball revolver age? No pushing individual rounds in, or fooling around with speedloaders, just replace an empty cylinder with a fresh one.

bflynn22 In reply to Tounushi [2010-09-05 07:08:48 +0000 UTC]
hmmmm, im not sure is that would be efficient. each cylinder would have to have electronic wiring, which would be pretty expensive.
but both methods could be engineered to work. so if you wanted a new cylinder that contained 10 mids for example, you could just swap the barrels. or if you really want you could manually reload with a speed loader by "opening" or "releasing" the back of the cylinder and inserting rounds. and no need to worry about shells... dang we should make guns.

If you have bullpup revolvers with easily swappable cylinders, you can maintain accuracy (thanks to the longer barrel), and quick reloading. And think of the cylinders as magazines. Would you replace an empty magazine with a full one, or would you try to quickly reload it with clips?
But I always imagined metal storm revolvers being more reminiscent of the old pepperbox revolvers, as such a style would have much more ammunition, and the cylinder would be easily swappable. The problem is, that the cylinders also have the barrels, taking more space.

awww, shit i total flip flopped chamber with cylinder.
me= n3wb
so yea, interchangeable cylinders. so a shooter could have one cylinder:
with 5 heavy rounds in the chambers
with 10 mid rounds
15 small rounds.
then swap the cylinders for whatever application they are looking for.
if the shooter desired, they could keep the cylinders in the weapon, open the "back", and insert the desired special round if they wanted.
the weapons burst could be single or auto. if auto is turned on when heavy rounds are in, it will obviously just shoot that one round. the mids will have a 2 round burst. the small rounds would be 3.

oh wow, i'd never ever think about bullpup revolvers °O°
it's a weeeeird but also quite interesting idea. the rifle-ish sights on the first model are strange but kinda interesting also..
oh and i like the amount of RIS, i can already think about several things i'd attach on it if i could have a revolver like this.. and i'm not even a fan of revolvers : D

Bullpup describes a type of firearm where the action(bullet being activated) and the magazine are located behind the trigger. In a more traditional firearm, the magazine and action is in front of trigger. the benefit to a bullpup gun is that it utilizes the space of the butt-stock (or in this case, the area behind the hand) making the barrel length longer. Longer barrel means more distance. So bullpup weapons are more compact and have longer barrels than the traditional setup.
Some issues with the bullpup...
the action happens next to the users cheek (this applies to rifles).
the british L85 rifle for example has had many problems... including jamming. there was one instance where the gun jammed and sent the next round into the users head. but this is a problem with bullpup rifles. not revolvers.
loading the magazine behind the hand can be awkward.
if want to know anything else, i suggest THE GOOGLE. use it.

i think technically yes, but i dont think it affects the range that much (minute difference). not sure though. usually more powerful rounds are used for longer barrels.
The range of a weapon is more based on the size/shape of the round and how much powder is packed behind it. o and also the rifling of the barrel.
when i said longer barrels = more range, i really meant to say the accuracy increases.. meaning the effective engagement range will extend.
you should use wikipedia and search rifle. or library. books. I am not an expert on these things.
